Jennifer Lawrence’s Hunger Games franchise is one of the most iconic film IPs of the 2010s, quietly slipping into the niche that was created by the Harry Potter franchise with a decade’s worth of films and accrued fandom. However, despite being the next step from curses and hexes, the Hunger Games star allegedly unleashed a curse of her own on the set of Hunger Games, and it almost got a crew member grievously injured.

A portion of the Hunger Games franchise was shot and filmed in Hawaii, specifically in a location that had a bunch of sacred stones. These rocks were sacred such that it was not okay to sit on them, as it would be considered the same as exposing one’s privates to the deity. However, Lawrence decided to look at the practical side of things rather than the cultural, and it almost cost a crew member his life.

Jennifer Lawrence’s excuse was her wet suit

Jennifer Lawrence was wearing a particularly uncomfortable wet suit, now that did not allow for much movement on her part. It was also one that chafed against her skin quite a bit, making it imperative that she itch certain parts of her body promptly. Little did she know, that the apparatus that she would go on to employ to satiate such cravings, would not only be sacrilegious but also nigh-fatal.

The actress revealed on The Graham Norton Show:

“One rock that I was butt scratching on, ended up coming loose. And it was a giant boulder that rolled down this mountain and almost killed our sound guy”

Lawrence reminisced how the suit and its material caused her to itch herself again and again, and doing so against the rock caused quite the boulder avalanche, which would have injured a member of the crew. This entire ordeal caused a lot of local outcry, thinking that this was indeed a curse.

Jennifer Lawrence has since apologized for the story

Despite the story seeming quirky at first, a lot of fans have identified that whatever Lawrence did was deeply disrespectful of the beliefs and understandings of the Native Hawaiians, and regardless of what the needs of the time were, Lawrence’s actions were shameful and counterproductive.

Further, her sharing the story in such a light and irreverent manner reflected a strong disregard for the emotions of the natives of the island. Lawrence took to social media to retract a lot of what she said, apologizing and making it clear that she did not mean any disrespect to the people of Hawaii.
