American actor Jeremy Renner is known for his role as Hawkeye, the bow-and-arrow-wielding superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Avengers films.
He was nominated for two Academy Awards. The first one is for Best Actor in The Hurt Locker for his soldier role and the other for Best Supporting Actor in The Town for portraying a hot-headed robber.
But on the night of the Oscars (for which he was nominated for Best Actor for his portrayal in the film The Hurt Locker), Renner had to prepare in a Starbucks because he didn’t have a functional bathroom at home.
Jeremy Renner Had to Brush His Teeth in Starbucks Before Oscars Ceremony
Before landing high-paying Hollywood roles, Jeremy Renner and his friend-turned-business partner invested in homes. After Renner’s movie S.W.A.T., they purchased a fixer-upper and lived in it during renovations.
They repeated this process with each purchased property, but the homes had one problem — they lacked running water and electricity. On the Howard Stern Show, Renner told the host they “were doing that all the way up until like The Hurt Locker.”
For that film, the Wind River star earned a first-ever Oscar nomination. But he remembered having to get ready in a Starbucks bathroom the night of the ceremony since he didn’t have a functional bathroom in his own home. He said:
“I … had to brush my teeth in a Starbucks because we had no running water, as I got into a limo to go to the Academy Awards. It’s character building, those types of things.”
Stern labeled it as a “sh*tty house” because it had no electricity and no running water, and in such a situation, Renner had to go to the Academy Awards.
Anyway, The Hurt Locker won Best Picture at the 2010 Oscars, and starring in that movie changed Renner’s life. Since then, the 52-year-old has established his side business into an empire today. But the start wasn’t easy at all.
A Look Into Jeremy Renner’s House Flipping Business Empire
With just $200 in his bank account, Jeremy Renner landed a role in S.W.A.T. in 2003 that allowed him to secure a loan. With his friend Kristoff Winters, they bought a house, renovated it, and received an offer of $900,000, which resulted in a $241,000 profit. This way, the actor created a side business for himself besides acting.
As already discussed, Renner and Winters used to live in the houses they were renovating, even without plumbing or electricity facilities (just to cut costs). Since the early 2000s, both roommates cum business partners have sold more than two dozen Southern California homes, including a Holmby Hills estate.
The actor also filmed a docu-series in partnership with Disney Plus titled Rennervations, where he gave his fans a glimpse of his side business.
