Actor Jeremy Renner is known for his portrayal of Clint Barton a.k.a Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He has been part of the franchise since 2009 and is one of the six original Avengers along with Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johannson, and Mark Ruffalo.
Renner starred in one of the highest-grossing films of all time Avengers: Endgame. The film was also the most anticipated film at the time and was prone to many spoilers. Hence, during the press tour for the film, Renner and co-star Paul Rudd came up with an ingenious way to avoid talking about all the spoilers.
Jeremy Renner And Paul Rudd Made A Fake Movie To Avoid Talking About Avengers
The MCU’s last leg in its ‘Infinity Saga’ was all set to end with the cinematic event films Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. The whole of the MCU till that point was building up to Earth’s mightiest heroes defending it against Thanos. While Jeremy Renner and Paul Rudd did not feature in the former, they were teased to play a larger role in the latter.
Renner and Rudd play Hawkeye and Ant-Man respectively in the franchise. The actors were touring the world prior to the release of Endgame to promote it. However, there was also the threat of spoiling any plot points about the heavily-anticipated film.
Hence, the duo decided to create a fake film called The 50-Year-Old Virgins and recounted fake anecdotes about the film in interviews. In an appearance on the talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live, Jeremy Renner spoke about the film,
“Paul and I decided to make up a movie that we’re in that we CAN talk about. So we’re 50-year-old virgins, and we can talk about that movie all you want!”
The joke went as far as creating posters with the actors in a signature pose and them refusing to talk about Avengers: Endgame.
How Did Jeremy Renner Avoid Talking About Avengers: Endgame Spoilers?
Ever since the teaser of Avengers: Endgame was released, featuring Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye in a darker and gritty look, there were fan theories that Hawkeye had turned into Ronin. Fans were excited to see the character in a new light and wanted to see him don the iconic Ronin attire with the signature sword.
However, when Renner was asked if he would turn into Ronin in the film, he conveniently avoided it by talking about his fake film with Paul Rudd. He also avoided the question of what were then rumors about a Disney+ series centered around Hawkeye.
Jeremy Renner said to Jimmy Kimmel when asked about a report written by Variety about the series and if he would be Ronin in the show,
“Well, look at their name. They have a variety of stories, right? They have a lot of things to say…They could be [right] about the variety of stories they have…wow 50-Year-Old Virgins is in theatres now.”
The rumor did turn out to be true and Jeremy Renner ended up donning the Ronin attire in both Avengers: Endgame and Hawkeye.
