JK Rowling’s epic creation of this magical world of Harry Potter worked wonders when her novels were adapted into a film franchise. Acquiring a massive fanbase through decades, the author turned Harry Potter into a $9.5B franchise, in collaboration with Warner Bros. But in recent years, Rowling’s production company appears to be facing a massive drop in revenue.
Brontë Film and TV, JK Rowling’s production company confirmed a gargantuan drop in revenue within 1 year. According to reports, several factors have affected the loss amid Rowling’s ongoing controversy surrounding her transphobic comments.
JK Rowling’s Production Company Suffered a Revenue Drop
According to Deadline reports, JK Rowling’s production company Brontë Film and TV, appears to be suffering gravely in regards to profits and revenues. Following the dismissal of the theatre performance of Harry Potter And The Cursed Child due to COVID-19, Rowling’s company posted a 74% drop in profits.
Established in 2012, JK Rowling’s production company enjoyed massive popularity and financial success. However, the pandemic seemingly affected the business and caused their revenue to be halved within a year. As per reports, the company had a $2.2M profit in 2022, as compared to a $8.37M profit the year before.
The extreme drop in profit was confirmed by Brontë Film and TV, as they reported a gargantuan 50% drop in revenue to $10.67M, according to a UK Companies House filing. The company blamed their closed theatrical productions due to COVID norms, as the reason behind their loss.
The Ongoing Controversies Surrounding JK Rowling
However, amid such tumultuous times, JK Rowling’s production company confirmed adapting The Ink Black Heart for the BBC. Willing to regain their profits, the company mentioned that production will begin by the end of 2023, and the premiere is slated to happen in 2024. The adaptation is set to become Season 6 of Strike.
This confirms that BBC is willing to renew JK Rowling‘s Strike series after issuing an apology over her comments after guests on news shows accused her of being transphobic. But now BBC’s attempt at renewing the series appears controversial to fans since the book coincidentally focuses on an author’s fall from grace after using racist and ableist tropes, and eventual murder.
Submerged in countless controversies and being constantly slammed by the Harry Potter stars, JK Rowling revealed that her book’s plot “genuinely wasn’t” inspired by her own life. However, controversies got intense and the renowned video game Hogwarts Legacy got banned from one of the world’s largest gaming forums. With further debates, Rowling consistently denied her transphobic comments.
