The course of the DC Universe changed forever following the James Gunn and Peter Safran takeover. The duo of new co-chairs made a slew of decisions about existing characters and storylines that altered the canon and showed fan-favorite stars such as Henry Cavill, the exit door. However, the Guardians of the Galaxy director’s rise to the top can largely be attributed to his stint as the visionary of 2021’s The Suicide Squad.

Soon after, he returned to helm the Peacemaker series, starring John Cena and once again took it high up in critical acclaim. The rising popularity of the character, thanks to the wrestler-actor’s brilliant performances, paved the way for a comeback in the upcoming The Suicide Squad ISEKAI anime series. Featuring prominently in its trailers, the botched moral equivalent of Marvel’s Captain America has undergone a complete makeover, unleashing a pure maniacal outlook.

A 30-second character teaser for Peacemaker from the anime dropped a while ago on YouTube and gave a brief overview of the character’s potential motives in the upcoming series. Although it did not feature John Cena reprising the role, its facial persona slightly mirrored the actor’s. Meanwhile, scenes like hammering someone and smiling menacingly as blood splattered all over him unleashed the true scale of unhinged madness lying in store.

The snippet also introduced Takehito Koyasu, the voice of Dio Brando in Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, as the voice actor, instead of Cena. Furthermore, it gave glimpses of Peacemaker being in a comic-accurate costume as his commitment to peace made him take extreme measures, essentially turning into a villain of sorts with a twisted sense of justice. Fight scenes involving werewolves and firing bullets just previewed the absolute incoming madness.

James Gunn’s take on Peacemaker with The Suicide Squad brought enough fanfare to get the character its own show with John Cena at the acting helm. The two outings brought out a unique blend of humor and unconventionally, while the story’s ethics allowed for violence as well as turning his ambitions and motivations relatable enough to have the audience remember him as a memorable character.

The actor’s incredible physique and charisma, coupled with his comedic timing, made way for some of the most fan-favorite moments since the onset of the DCEU itself. Thereafter, the positive critical acclaim cemented the character further and brought in record viewership, turning Peacemaker from an obscure live-action figure into one of its biggest strengths, all ahead of the incoming new DC canon that will see David Corenswet’s Superman: Legacy kick-start it.
