The DCU has been slowly morphing into James Gunn’s vision, one project at a time. Although many questioned his authority as the co-CEO when it was initially announced, he has been proving himself to be worthy through his plan for the franchise. One could say that the filmmaker is being extensively deliberate with the projects he greenlights and those he doesn’t.
The perfect example of this would be the hit series, Peacemaker. Where many would assume that the decision for a second season was an easy one for Gunn, with the success that the series saw, the truth is something entirely different.
It seems that Gunn and Cena were quite conflicted when deciding if the 2022 series should get another season.
James Gunn and John Cena Had Doubts
After the release of the season finale of Peacemaker, James Gunn interviewed with Variety. Here, he talked about the second season of the series, which had just been announced at the time. The filmmaker revealed the direction he wanted to take with the story, as well as how he decided that he wanted to continue the character’s journey.
Interestingly enough, Gunn revealed that he and John Cena were initially not interested in pursuing the series for another season.
“John and I did not agree to a second season off the bat because we wanted to make sure this is something we really love doing that we really wanted.” said James Gunn.
Since the series became quite successful, many were expecting there to be another season. The pair did not want to give in to this pressure and make another season just for the sake of it. They wanted to make sure that it was something they actually wanted to partake in. They wanted to enjoy the process of making the series and not do it because they had to.
James Gunn Took His Time
James Gunn went on to reveal that these reservations were the reason why DC Studios took their time announcing the next season. He then spoke about his own hesitancy, revealing that he did not want the second season of the series to happen just for the sake of making more money.
“That’s why it’s being announced now, because we had to work everything out. I didn’t agree to a second season just off the bat, it wasn’t a matter of like, okay, we’re picked up. It’s a matter of I just wanted to make sure it was really something I wanted to do.”
Oftentimes, many directors and creators do not wish to come back for additional sequels and seasons unless they have something worthwhile. They do not wish to continue a story unless they find something that they want to say. Gunn is no different in this, stating that he wanted to make another season only if he found something he wanted to make.
