Gunn revealed that season one of Peacemaker was not canon to the DCU as the shared universe only begins when the animated show Creature Commandos begins to air. The filmmaker mentioned that season two, however, would be canon to the DCU and would take place after Superman, leading fans to be more confused about the timeline of the universe.

James Gunn took over as the co-chief of DC Studios along with Peter Safran to soft reboot the shared universe previously known as DCEU. The filmmaker announced his slate of DC films, shows, and animated series that would come under the new DCU umbrella, adding that he would be starting with Superman, starring David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan.

The starting chapter of the DCU was called ‘Gods and Monsters’ with films and shows such as Creature Commandos, The Authority, Superman, Waller, Lanterns, and more being a part of it. Gunn had previously directed the film The Suicide Squad and its spinoff series Peacemaker. The series and film were released before Gunn took over as the head of DC Studios.

Recently, James Gunn revealed on his social media that Peacemaker season two was set to begin filming in the summer and that it would be canon to the DCU, unlike season one. The DCU would officially begin after the release of the animated series Creature Commandos, which would be the beginning of the ‘Gods and Monsters’ chapter.

Hence, James Gunn revealed that the entirety of season two of Peacemaker will be canon, with only some ‘strands’ carrying over from the first season.

The DCEU, which had films such as Man of Steel, Justice League, Wonder Woman, and others was soft-rebooted even before they met their complete end when James Gunn took over as the chief of DC Studios along with Peter Safran. The filmmaker announced his new slate of films even before all of the DCEU films in production were released.

On top of that, James Gunn’s directorial The Suicide Squad and the spinoff series Peacemaker were fan favorites, prompting DC Studios to continue on with the characters and the series. Another spinoff series from the film Waller was also in development and was reportedly pushed due to the strikes (via Threads).

After the new announcement that a second season of Peacemaker was in the making, James Gunn also clarified what would be canon to the DCU and what would not be. He mentioned that season one of Peacemaker was not entirely canon as the DCU only began with Creature Commandos. He mentioned that events from Superman would affect Peacemaker.

This update concerned fans as many of the ideas seemed to be confusing for a coherent shared universe. Fans began to criticize the filmmaker for making stuff up as he went along.
