The end of Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen manga series is coming closer with every chapter. While fans are sad that one of the greatest anime and manga series is soon going to bid farewell, they are also thrilled as the current narrative of the story is focusing on the biggest battle to have ever prevailed in the history of the series.
However, even during the final chapters, Jujutsu Kaisen fans are disappointed with one major flaw that has been recurrent in the manga. This flaw is the translation failure for the chapters from Japanese to English. Akutami’s masterpiece has amassed a global fanbase, but these fans are often seen complaining about how the translation of the chapters is not accurate.
A similar instance happened with Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 267, which was released on August 25, 2024. The chapter featured the much-awaited return of Nobara Kugisaki, but the translation ruined it for many fans. Still, there was some silver lining to it as it matched the error that was made during Yuji’s return in the Kyoto Goodwill arc.
Nobara’s Return Ruined By Jujutsu Kaisen Manga Translation
Fans of Jujutsu Kaisen were devastated to see Nobara Kugisaki clinging to life after Mahito launched an attack on her. They hoped for her return, and even though there was no confirmation, fans were pretty positive that she would make the most epic comeback at the most crucial moment. And that’s what she did.
Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 267 revealed that Nobara patiently waited for her moment in the series and finally made a return when Yuji needed her the most. Her iconic return also referenced Yuji’s comedic return during the Kyoto Goodwill arc, but because of translation failures, it got ruined.
According to a Jujutsu Kaisen fan account @biyuuji on X, in the Japanese version, Nobara’s first words after her return were “How’s that for Opppappi, you dawn idiot.”
But the official translation changed it completely. They did a similar thing with Yuji’s return and were heavily criticized for changing the original meaning.
Nobara’s Translation Failure Might Have Worked in the Favor of Jujutsu Kaisen
In the original Japanese version, when Yuji Itadori makes a comeback after being dead, he is introduced by Gojo to all the students of Jujutsu High. During his introduction, Yuji struck an iconic pose and said the words Oppapi, which was a reference to the Japanese comedian Yoshio Kojima and his routine.
However, the official English translation of the Jujutsu Kaisen manga chapter changed it completely and removed the Kojima reference completely.
This angered a lot of hardcore fans, and now they did the same thing with Nobara’s return, bringing back the frustration from the past. Thus fans targeted the official English translator of Jujutsu Kaisen, John Werry.
Although the translation failure caused a lot of annoyance for Jujutsu Kaisen fans, in the end, it worked out for the best. This is because he aligned with the return of Yuji Itadori, completing the reference that Gege Akutami was trying to make in the first place.
