Jake Gyllenhaal’s Road House remake has delivered an exceptional performance after its release on Amazon Prime. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, the film has been successful on the OTT platform. However, the film has raised another round of headlines after Undisputed fame, Scott Adkins, also joined in to criticize the remake of the Patrick Swayze action classic.
Scott Adkins is also a prominent action star, popular for his Undisputed film series and other action projects like The Expendables 2, Triple Threat, and John Wick: Chapter 4. Recently, the actor-cum-martial artist took to his social media to criticize the action sequences in Jake Gyllenhaal’s latest. The fights in 2024’s Road House have been criticized by many for the overuse of CGI.
Scott Adkins wanted more realistic action pieces in Jake Gyllenhaal’s Road House
Recently the usage of CGI has seen a spike in the latest films. Although the fans have time and again complained about it, the latest films rely heavily on it. Road House also suffers from the same problem. Now Scott Adkins has taken to his X to share that he enjoyed the film but was highly disappointed with the CGI fight sequences.
Jake Gyllenhaal‘s physical transformation for Road House made several headlines. He put in a lot of effort and went through a rigorous process to look like a UFC fighter. However, it would have been better if the film also relied on practical fight sequences rather than relying on CGI usage. Adkins also reflected the same statement claiming that Patrick Swayze did not need CGI.
I really enjoyed Road House. Doug Liman – great job subverting genre & Gyllenhaal in amazing shape, respect! What a debut from @TheNotoriousMMA happy when a movie like this does well as it's my bread & butter but c'mon, what's with the CGI fight scenes?! Swayze didn't need it. https://t.co/aV9PKkHtyq

Road House took a different approach to filming the fight scenes where the actors were replaced with pillows when needed to be hit during action sequences. Then by splicing the frames together, it presented a flawless sequence where the impact of the punches can be felt harder by the audience.
Scott Adkins acknowledged in another tweet that if used properly, CGI can also enhance the quality of action sequences. The actor who played Killa in John Wick 4 gave the example of Johnny Nguyen’s 2006 project, The Rebel. According to him, the latter was much more impactful than Road House.
Road House establishes a new record for Amazon Prime Video
Jake Gyllenhaal’s intense workout regime and Conor McGregor’s film had set massive chatter for Road House before its release. The film follows a former UFC fighter being recruited as the head bouncer for a Florida Keys roadhouse. According to Deadline, the remake of the Patrick Swayze film set a record 50 million viewership since its release on March 21.
Reportedly, 50 million viewers is the highest for any original film produced by Amazon for Prime Video. The film went through much drama before finally getting its lead actor and director, Jake Gyllenhaal and Doug Liman. The latter has directed the iconic Mr. & Mrs. Smith and some other renowned action flicks like The Bourne Identity and Edge of Tomorrow.
The head of Amazon MGM Studios, Jennifer Salke claimed that the success of the latest film is a “testament to the hard work and commitment” of Jake Gyllenhaal and the entire crew. The Love & Other Drugs actor also received praise for his performance in the film. However, the CGI and script are highly criticized for attracting mixed reception to the film.
Both iterations of Road House can be streamed on Amazon Prime.
