While Keanu Reeves has not officially been cast as the protector in the DC Universe, the Green Lantern has been adapted quite a few times in other media. Animated depictions of the character have been seen in the Justice League series and WB’s DCAU films. The first live-action adaptation of the superhero came with 2011’s Green Lantern.

The Martin Campbell directorial starred Ryan Reynolds, before his stint as Deadpool, in the lead role, playing the Hal Jordan version of the Green Lantern. The film also starred Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, and Mark Strong. The film was one of the biggest box office bombs in history, earning only $220 million against a $200 million budget.

The film was heavily criticized for its visual effects, tone, and writing. The film was intended to be a set-up for a shared cinematic universe. However, due to its failure, WB chose to start the cinematic universe with the Henry Cavill starrer Man of Steel. Ryan Reynolds himself took a dig at the film in Deadpool 2.
