Forget CGI and stunt doubles; sometimes, the best scenes are the ones that are as real as they get. Of Martin Scorsese’s unforgettable scenes, one truly stands out.

Enter Bernthal, who, in character as Brad, gets seriously ticked off with Hill’s Donnie. What follows isn’t your typical movie punch. Nope, the 40-year-old takes a real hit from Bernthal.

Initially, they tried faking it, but according to Bernthal on The Howard Stern Show, it just didn’t look genuine enough for Scorsese. So, they went all in.

Looking back, Hill, in a chat with Vanity Fair, admitted it’s one of his favorite scenes ever. He recalled, “John punches me in the face, and it’s one of my favorite scenes I’ve ever acted in.”

The creative process behind this real punch started at the top with Scorsese. Hill spilled the beans, saying,

“We go back in the room. Marty’s in there going, ‘It looks stupid. It looks fake.’ Leo[nardo DiCaprio] and I are sitting on a tiny little couch, and Jon is pacing back and forth, and I’m not scared because, you know, it’s just a movie. And Marty’s like, Why don’t you try hitting him for real?”

The result? A punch so real that Hill’s fake teeth went flying. Scorsese, the perfectionist, wanted to capture the aftermath, even the swelling, on camera.

This unscripted scene not only left its mark on the film but also on Hill’s face. It highlighted the lengths to which actors go for their craft. Yet, that’s not the only behind-the-scenes revelation from Hill; he previously shared a stint in the hospital thanks to inhaling too much fake c*caine.

In the frenzy of filming The Wolf of Wall Street, the Superbad star encountered an unexpected health scare that goes beyond the glitz of Hollywood.

C*caine, a major theme in the movie, might be a big no-no in real life due to its severe side effects; heart attack, stroke, respiratory failure, and even death, not to mention that it’s illegal and expensive. The irony? On movie sets, fake c*caine is used to avoid these risks.

Yet, fake doesn’t mean risk-free. Hill found himself in the ER after unintentionally overdosing on vitamin powder disguised as fake c*caine during the seven-month shoot. As per Bill Simmons on Any Given Wednesday, the artist revealed,

“I had to be hospitalized. If you ingest that much matter into your lungs you’ll get very sick, and we were literally doing fake coke for, like, seven months, every day.”

Further, he added,

“I never had more vitamin D in my entire life. I could have lifted a car over my f**king head.”

His dedication to the role resulted in a real-life twist, showcasing the unseen challenges actors face behind the scenes. This incident adds a unique layer to the chaotic tale of one of Hollywood’s most iconic films.
