A recent rumor has emerged regarding the alleged departure of Jon Favreau, creator and executive producer of The Mandalorian, from Lucasfilm and Star Wars due to incessant meddling from Lucasfilm head, Kathleen Kennedy.

The rumor was shared by YouTuber Overlord DVD, who provided several examples of Kennedy’s alleged interference in Favreau’s vision for The Mandalorian and its spin-offs.

Kathleen Kennedy’s Interference with The Mandalorian and its Spin-Offs

According to Overlord DVD, Kathleen Kennedy interfered with The Mandalorian in various ways, including orchestrating the firing of actress Gina Carano, cancelling the previously announced Rangers of the New Republic series that would have starred Carano, mandating the inclusion of space Vespas in The Book of Boba Fett, and changing scripts in The Book of Boba Fett to reunite Grogu with Din Djarin.

Overlord DVD also claimed that Kennedy approached the marketing department to ensure the inclusion of Vespas in The Book of Boba Fett, despite Jon Favreau‘s opposition.

“Kennedy’s alleged next move against Favreau was corrupting The Book of Boba Fett. She couldn’t directly interfere with his production, but Kennedy is clever, devilishly clever. When she saw that Robert Rodriguez wanted to introduce the idiotic Vespas into Book of Boba Fett and Favreau hated the idea, Kennedy approached the marketing department and got them to say, “Oh yes, we can sell those. Let’s make it happen.’”

The user also claimed Jon Favreau initially planned to have Grogu train with Luke Skywalker to become a Jedi but then Kennedy or someone in her camp interfered with the reunification of Din Djarin and Grogu in The Book of Boba Fett, resulting in a spectacularly awful decision that truly messed up everything Jon Favreau was planning.

“Clearly, Favreau planned to have Grogu go train with Luke and become a Jedi. It was a heartbreaking and final episode of Mandalorian Season 2 and it proved that Favreau had a master plan for all his series and it was a damn good plan. But then Kennedy or someone in her camp or maybe just an idiot in upper management said, ‘Oh no! Baby Yoda is the only Star Wars toy that’s selling right now. We can’t lose Baby Yoda. We need to put Baby Yoda back with Din Djarin.’ This was the height of stupidity. A spectacularly awful decision that truly f***ed up everything Jon Favreau was planning,”

Jon Favreau’s Alleged Departure and Its Consequences

As a result of Kennedy’s alleged interference, Overlord DVD claimed that Jon Favreau was so disgusted that he decided to depart from Lucasfilm and Star Wars to work on Ahsoka. This departure allegedly resulted in a disastrous story and product, so much so that “upper management” had to convince Jon Favreau to come back and fix it.

“As a result, Favreau was so disgusted he said, ‘F*** it. Let them do whatever the hell they want. I’m going to go off and work on Ahsoka in peace, upper management allegedly had to be Favreau to come back and fix it, but it was too late to do much except insert some Mandalorian episodes, to cut a few Book of Boba Fett scripts, and hold his nose.”

This is just a rumor and has not been confirmed by either Jon Favreau or Kathleen Kennedy. Moreover in 2021, Favreau praised Kennedy during an episode of Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian.

He said that people care deeply about Star Wars and want to see it treated respectfully, and that they are lucky to have Kennedy as president of Lucasfilm who is supportive and encourages creativity. He also described Kennedy as a great producer who knows how to create a conducive environment for storytelling and incubate ideas.
