Kevin Feige Wins the Tussle With Sony for Tom Holland’s Spider-Man 4 With Major Update That Might Upset a Few Fans (Reports)

  • However, per reports, Sony didn't see eye to eye with the MCU on that matter, as they reportedly wanted to taste 'NWH''s glory once again.
  • But following the new reports regarding Jon Watts' exit, it seems the MCU might had the final say in that matter.

Impressed by his work on Cop Car, Marvel brought Jon Watts to helm Spider-Man: Homecoming, starring Tom Holland. Following its success, the director was brought back to craft the next two sequels in the franchise with a much bigger scope than the first one, which was fairly a street-level film. But being a street-level film was one of Homecoming‘s biggest charms, as it helped the movie differentiate itself from other MCU IPs, and Marvel is reportedly looking to go that route again.

However, per reports, Sony was against this idea and wanted the fourth part to follow in No Way Home‘s footsteps by bringing Watts back, but it appears, it isn’t going in Sony’s favor this time.

Spider-Man 4 Might Follow Kevin Feige’s Vision Following Jon Watts’ Exclusion

Apart from being the biggest release in the wall-crawler’s filmography, No Way Home also beautifully laid the groundwork for a more traditional Webhead from the comics. From living in a crappy apartment to sewing his own suits, everything looks poised for a more traditional Spider-Man story for the fourth film.

But according to Daniel Richtman (via Comicbookmovie.com), it seemed the higher-ups at Sony were at odds with Kevin Feige and MCU’s supposed direction for Tom Holland‘s wall-crawler.

Sony reportedly wanted Spider-Man to bring in its predecessor’s multiversal elements by bringing in Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire and have Jon Watts pen the film once again. However, it seems the rumored tussle between the two studios has come to an end with Kevin Feige and the MCU coming on top, as per new reports from Daniel Richtman, Watts may be out for good. With the MCU reportedly scouting for a new director for Spider-Man 4, it appears the upcoming entry will indeed go back to the character’s roots.

While this looks like an enticing direction for Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, some might be reasonably upset if Jon Watts is left out of the fourth part. Considering the director has told three acclaimed Spider-Man stories, ranging from street-level to multiverses, his exclusion will be hard on fans of the Homecoming trilogy.

Vincent D’Onofrio Wants Kingpin to Be Incorporated in Spider-Man 4

If the aforementioned reports turn out to be true and Spider-Man 4 is indeed shaping out to be more of a grounded story, there’s a good chance we might see Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin in the mix. While previously rumored to appear in the film, D’Onofrio confirmed that the MCU has yet to reach out to him regarding the matter. While the actor did see eye to eye with the reported direction, he had no idea if things would turn out this way.

D’Onofrio said (via Comicbook.com),

“I think if the powers that be want that to happen then it will happen, you know? I think there certainly hasn’t been any kind of talk that it’s not gonna happen… I mean, to me that’s the direction that we should go in…but who knows? You know, you get these calls and they’re like, ‘Oh we’re doing this now.’ I’m like, ‘Oh, okay.’ You know, it’s like that.”

With no release date in sight, and the MCU reportedly on the scout for a brand new filmmaker, it might be a long while before the fourth film makes its way to the public.
