Spider-Man: No Way Home rocked the world of Marvel fandom more than two years ago and left the fans of the web-slinger immensely satisfied. One of the well-hidden secrets in the film was the appearance of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Mans from earlier Sony films. One scene involving Garfield’s Peter Parker has sparked new doubts about a potential plot hole in the billion-dollar-grossing film.
In The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Jamie Foxx played the central villain Electro / Max Dillon. Dillon was an electrical engineer at Oscorp who idolized Spider-Man before a freak accident turned him into a powerful living electric capacitor. It is Spider-Man’s interactions with Max Dillon that are at the center of the new confusion.
Is Andrew Garfield’s One Scene In Spider-Man: No Way Home A Major Plot Hole?
In one scene in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Andrew Garfield‘s character talks about the villains he faced in his universe with Tobey Maguire‘s Spider-Man. The conversation turns to Jamie Foxx‘s Electro, whom Garfield describes as the “sweetest guy”. He went on to explain to Maguire how the nice guy turned into a villain after falling into a pool of electric eels.
While fans didn’t notice anything odd about this scene before, Marvel scooper @MyTimeToShineH pointed out one potential plot hole in the scene. According to the scooper, the scene doesn’t make any sense because Garfield’s Spider-Man didn’t know how Max Dillon became Electro or that he was the “sweetest guy” since he met him only once.
How did he even know how he became Electro or that he was the "Sweetest guy" he only met him ONCE 😭 https://t.co/B1k7U694pQ

However, fans on X had a multitude of solutions to this plot hole. One fan suggested that there must have occurred an official investigation following the events of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, during which the authorities would have found the security footage from Oscorp. Another suggested that Peter himself would have found the evidence since he worked for The Daily Bugle.
One fan shared that Peter Parker knew the character’s name, where he worked, and Gwen Stacy, his girlfriend, worked with Max. The fan added that it was obvious that Peter would dig into details after the traumatic events of the film. However, one fan did agree that there was a plot hole, but it was not the one the scooper mentioned. The fan wanted to know how Max Dillon knew the identity of Spider-Man.
There was a police investigation afterwards. This was years after

Do you think only things that happen in the world happen on screen….? He knew his name, where he worked, and that his girlfriend worked with him. It wouldn’t have been hard to find more info. Goddamn

You could tell. The contrast between who he was and when he became Electro was striking. Well played by Foxx.

Pete probably looked into him a little. The real question is, how tf is electro even there when he never finds out who Spider-Man is😭🙏

The new plot hole is an attempt to spark a controversial MCU debate about the two-year-old movie, but it may not take off as expected. However, there might still be some controversial plot holes in the MCU version of Electro’s character, which can put the debates surrounding the disastrous film, The Marvels, to rest.
How Did Electro Know Spider-Man’s Identity In Spider-Man: No Way Home?
In Spider-Man: No Way Home, only those Spider-Man villains, who knew the identity of the web-slinger, entered Earth-616 during Doctor Strange’s corrupted spell. However, as fans pointed out in their reaction, Electro never knew Spider-Man’s identity as Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. It could be a detail the filmmakers missed during the multiversal film, however, one fan on Reddit may have solved this confusion for all.
According to Redditor, u/Ed_Derick, the secret behind Electro mysteriously identifying Peter Parker as Spider-Man was explained in the film itself. When Electro describes how he teleported to Earth-616 to Tom Holland‘s Peter, he shared:
“I was stuck in the grid, absorbing data, I was about to turn into pure energy and then… and then uh… and then- oh sh*t, I was about to die.”
The Redditor’s simple solution suggests that the villain discovered Spider-Man’s identity just seconds before his teleportation when he was “absorbing data”. He must have connected the dots with this data to realize that Peter Parker was Spider-Man. The fan also validly points out that it could not have been a random revelation in the film.
Another solution suggests that Gwen Stacy addresses Spider-Man by his real name Peter at one point, which may have given it away. It is clear that fans are not ready to give up their completely satisfying experience of this film due to a few silly plot holes.
