With the Avengers becoming torch-bearers of the past and their memory serving as mythical reminders of what the MCU once used to be, fans too have languished in the glory days of old. After spending years and billions in resources behind rebuilding the franchise, it’s high time Marvel regrouped its best and brightest for a team-up movie in an effort to jumpstart its lost momentum.

Following the comic book movie industry’s rapid downfall in the wake of mass-induced superhero fatigue, nothing short of a quality lineup can convince the audience to reinvest their time and energy into the MCU again. As such, the best aspects of Phases Four and Five need to converge and establish the foundation for what is yet to come – a new chapter in Marvel’s gloriously burdened saga.

Marvel Needs to Up the Ante With 1 Major Superhero Team-Up

When Eternals premiered, the ensemble film may not have won over as many fans as it had originally hoped, but the film’s ultra-cool post-credits scene more than made up for the downtrodden fan expectation. Featuring not only one but two of the greatest story arcs in Marvel history, the double-decked teaser featuring the Black Knight and an off-screen Blade was a minor taste of what was to come.

But sadly, the post-credit scene was followed up by a litany of horribly scripted, distastefully conjured, unnecessary films that the MCU could have honestly done without. Instead of splurging hundreds of millions in budget on films such as Thor: Love and Thunder and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, the MCU should have invested in scripting a Midnight Suns storyline – whether over the course of a limited series arc or a multiple movie narrative.

By utilizing the teased cameos and characters from the numerous failed Phase Four endeavors, a plot introducing several heroes in individual episodic arcs, who come together in the end to establish the Midnight Suns, could have played very well in the MCU. Instead of focusing on megalomaniacal Multiversal adventures that lead nowhere, a grassroots-level team-up of edgier supernatural heroes would have sparked a renewed vigor in the MCU with iconic characters such as Black Knight, Blade, Ghost Rider, Hannibal King, Constantine, Moon Knight, Scarlet Scarab, and more.

Midnight Suns Could Be the Next Avengers-Style MCU Event

In an ideal world, the MCU is a utopian haven for movie lovers who are constantly supplied with a tasteful selection of genres such as sci-fi, action, bromance, procedural, horror, comedy, fantasy, supernatural, and everything in between. Such a utopian world would have also assessed the needs of the increasingly irritated and impatient fans for a drastic change in direction for the stalled and deteriorating MCU ever since Avengers: Endgame.

After failing to uphold quality in lieu of quantity, Marvel has forgotten one of its essential traits lies in the business of superhero team-ups and Avengers-scale events. For instance, the She-Hulk series could have easily been replaced by Midnight Suns which could not only introduce several key players at once in the MCU but also assemble a fleshed-out arc of supernaturally-powered heroes before segueing into a full-blown Avengers-style team-up movie.

In a June 2024 Discord Q&A session, insider source Alex Perez shared (via The Cosmic Circus):

I’ve heard Wong, Moon Knight, Ghost Rider, Blade, Werewolf by Night, & Man-Thing as the most repeated names by sources as part of the team roster. Other names I’ve heard, from most to least likely, include Black Knight, Scarlet Scarab, Elsa Bloodstone, Dr. Strange, and even Agatha Harkness. But if I had to guess how many members I’d expect for this team lineup, I’d say between 6-9 members.

If the rumors turn out to be true, then all hope may not yet be lost for the nostalgia-driven fans of the franchise. More importantly, one forgotten character with great potential could find his way back into the mainstream timeline via the Midnight Suns storyline. After being teased and discarded in the Eternals post-credits, Kit Harington‘s Black Knight would finally find a purpose despite his short-lived debut stint in the MCU.

With high anticipation circling around the character since 2021, Black Knight’s entry is certainly a profitable endeavor from the studio’s business point of view. However, since a solo outing would be too much for the character, given all the Multiversal shenanigans that the franchise has been up to, Midnight Suns continues to be the most convincing and most interesting path to follow in the future.
