Director Rian Johnson has previously teased fans with an easter egg on the upcoming sequel. He stated via Variety:

I love everything about whodunnits, but one of the things I love most is how malleable the genre is. There’s a whole tonal spectrum from Carr to Christie, and getting to explore that range is one of the most exciting things about making Benoit Blanc movies.

In his interview with Uproxx, Johnson said he wasn’t a fan of sequels, but Knives Out changed everything for him. The franchise was all he was thinking of. He said that they made his Netflix deal as flexible as possible so that he could do another project. It turns out, Knives Out 3 was the most exciting for him.

I’ve never really been interested in doing sequels, but this, the idea of doing more of these with Daniel as his character, is not sequels. It’s just what Agatha Christie did. It’s just coming up with a whole new mystery, a whole new location, all new cast, whole new mechanics of the appeal of a mystery and everything.

Netflix acquired the rights to Knives Out 2 and 3 in March 2021 for $450 million. It is expected that the upcoming film will have an entirely new cast and a new mystery.
