The Lawmen: Bass Reeves episode “Part IV” attempts to establish the legendary lawman’s core values. However, as the episode progresses, the series begins to draw comparisons to modern themes of social justice issues today.

This suggests that, at some point, Bass may start to question his role as a lawman. Also, Bass now has to worry about watching his back, as a black market bounty is in his head.

Here’s what happened in Lawmen: Bass Reeves Season 1, Episode 4:

  • Judge Parker (Donald Sutherland) is the presiding magistrate for Crawford County in Arkansas. He is Bass Reeves’s (David Oyelowo) boss. Parker has Reeves head off to arrest outlaws, including the Dolliver brothers.
  • Billy Crow (Forrest Goodluck) is now Bass’s new posse man.
  • One of the men Bass arrests is Ramsey. Crow does not lock him properly at night while he’s asleep. Ramsey attempts to murder Reeves in his sleep, but Bass fights him off and knocks him unconscious. Ramsey also murdered a fellow prisoner while Bass and Billy were asleep.
  • We suspect Ramsey’s play was to gather a reward. Bass’s associate, Minco Dodge, tells Reeves where to find him. He also lets the lawman know a bounty is now on his head.
  • While attempting to bring in an outlaw, Silas Cobb, Billy shoots them in the back, and he dies. Reeves delivers the news to Cobb’s widow, who is blind and does not know the infamous lawman. The episode ends with a man approaching Bass from behind but running off.

Predictions for Lawmen: Bass Reeves Season 1 Episode 5

Lawmen Bass Reeves
The new Paramount+ series Lawmen Bass Reeves premiers November 5th, 2023.
  • The episode ends with two big questions. One, who was the man Bass saw at the horse? This has to be a bounty hunter of some kind. Remember, Bass was informed that there’s a bounty on his head. Something tells me that the man on the horse is Esau Pierce.
  • The second question the viewer should ask is, Did Billy kill Ramsey? The last time we saw Billy, he was being manipulated by Ramsey. Billy is still trying to deal with the guilt of killing a man. He looks like he is hyperventilating. I predict Ramsey will kill Billy, not the other way around.
  • Jenny (Lauren E. Banks) is being influenced by a local politician about the role Reeves has in the community. I predict Jenny will also begin to question Bass’s role, putting a strain on their relationship.
  • Could the final question be, when does Bass ride off into the sunset and leave the law behind?
