The Lawmen: Bass Reeves episode “Part V” is the best of the freshman season so far. The story continues to delve into chipping away at the lawman’s ethics and morality.

Last week, we began to question at some point if Bass Reeves may start to seriously analyze his role as a lawman in the age of Reconstruction.

As tonight’s episode progresses, we begin to see the groundwork for problematic family issues could bring those concerns full circle.

Here’s what happened in Lawmen: Bass Reeves Season 1, Episode 5:

  • Bass (David Oyelowo) and Billy Crow (Forrest Goodluck) kill four outlaws in a firefight. If their targets perish, they provide proof to the courthouse; in this case, it’s the bad guys’ footwear. In a line that rivals great scripted series dialogue like “Don’t disrespect the pizza parlor,” Bass tells Billy in his best grizzled and weathered lawman voice, “End the man’s pain, take his boots.”
  • Even though Bass has spent 41 days out chasing and catching outlaws, Judge Parker (Donald Sutherland) has Sheryll Lynn (Dennis Quaid) deliver some bad news: Bass must return to the road.
  • Jennie (Lauren E. Banks) is understandably upset that he is leaving again, questioning why he doesn’t take the oath of their marriage as seriously as his oath to the law. Bass also has to cancel taking his daughter Sally to the fair.
  • Jennie is allowed to go to the fair with Sally and Arthur. There, Sally confronts a small white girl who cuts the line and tells them they belong in the back—a clear example of inherent racism taught to children at the time.
  • Sally and Arthur are confronted by the girl’s teenage siblings, leading to a physical altercation. Arthur, aware of the dangers, goes along with Sally’s wishes not to tell anyone.
  • Bass and Billy capture and transport Jackson “Jack Rabbit” Cole, who is going back to Texas for the murder of a white man. It turns out that Jackson murdered a former enslaver who refused to free his slaves after emancipation, instead burning them to death in the fields. The man later ran for public office before meeting his fate at the hands of Cole.
  • When delivering Cole to a U.S. Marshal in Texas, Bass gets the surprise of his life—Esau Pierce (Barry Pepper).

Predictions for Lawmen: Bass Reeves Season 1 Episode 6

Lawmen Bass Reeves
The new Paramount+ series Lawmen Bass Reeves premiers November 5th, 2023.
  • I am worried about Sally and Arthur. Jennie’s friend Esme tells her a story about how black men and women are going missing during this period of reconstruction. Sally is defiant of the inherent racism, but she may not know that it is something that can get her or Arthur killed. I predict Arthur may suffer the consequences.
  • If Sally or Jennie are assaulted or killed, this could be the breaking point. The series has been working towards Bass questioning his role in law enforcement.
  • How will Bass deal with meeting Esau again? Remember, the last time Bass saw the former Southern soldier, he shot a child to death? There is no way Bass can let this go if he truly lives by the code he holds himself to.
