In Lawmen Bass Reeves, Episode “Part VII” opens with Bass’s mental health and well-being having been tested all season. During the episode, it all comes to a head. We cannot hear what is being said while Bass stands in the courtroom.

The decision to have the audio during the episode is a choice to reflect the lawman’s mental state, obsessed with the fact that Esau is “Mr. Sundown.” Something has happened, but we don’t know why he is on trial.

Rewind to six weeks later. The titular character is having dinner with his wife, Jennie, Judge Parker, and his wife. Bass is still lost in thought and still hears Esau’s voice in his head. Judge Parker notices Bass’s lack of focus.

It’s a stunning turn by David Oyelowo, who takes Bass’s obsession to a new level and elevates the series above your standard CBS-funded Western.

Here’s what happened in Lawmen Bass Reeves Season 1, Episode 7:

  • Judge Parker (Donald Sutherland) takes Bass (David Oyelowo) off the highly stressful, long-distance cases. Bass is assigned a chance to bring in an outlaw but ends up arresting his wife, Moody O’Neil, who killed them with a candle holder.
  • However, the Chuckwagon cook, Willy, allows Moody to go while Bass and Billy Crow (Forrest Goodluck) sleep. Willy berates Bass for betraying his people. Bass draws his weapon and is in no mood to be argued with.
  • Bass begins to think over all the cases that have bothered him throughout the season. He then sees Willy reach for his weapon. Bass fires, shooting him in the neck. Willy bleeds out and dies. Bass is arrested and put on trial. However, he is acquitted. It appears Judge Parker may have overruled the jury’s verdict.
  • Meanwhile, the little white girl Sally, who waits in the back of the line, comes to the house. She asks Jennie (Lauren E Banks) whether this is the Reeves’s house, the Bass’s home, and if Sally is home. She then excuses herself and runs away.
  • One of Jenny’s little children points out the window during dinner, with Bass still away. Some have set what looks like a scarecrow on fire. Esme was there as well. It seems the Bass family is being targeted.

Predictions for Lawmen: Bass Reeves Season 1 Episode 8

Lawmen Bass Reeves
The new Paramount+ series Lawmen Bass Reeves premiers November 5th, 2023.
  • Will Bass arrest Esau (Barry Pepper) and bring him back to Arkansas for justice? If anything, we know Esau never goes quietly. And if he does, he has an escape plan. Something tells me Esau will be killed at the hands of Bass.
  • Bass, Sherill (Dennis Quaid), and Billy Crow ride off into the sunset, but who comes back alive? I predict Sherill Lynn will die at the hands of Esau.
  • What about Billy Crow? Bass will return and give up his badge. Bass will then convey to Judge Parker that Billy is ready to be a U.S. Marshal. Why? Another prediction is that Billy saves Bass’s life.
  • Did Sally run away? Knowing her mother would find it, she left a note on the piano. Does Sally go to Paris to look for her childhood crush? We hope so, but I’m worried something sinister is building up to the season finale.
  • Something is going on with Bass and Jennie. The way they aren’t speaking shows a severe crack in their marriage or a prelude to something else. Could Bass’s family be dead, and he’s seeing them only in his thoughts? Only to be revealed in the season finale?
  • Probably not, but if Bass is leaving for Texas, he leaves his family in imminent danger of retribution.
