Robert Eggers found worldwide fame when he directed the 2015 movie The VVitch. He later joined forces with Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe to create the 2019 masterpiece titled The Lighthouse. Seemingly inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s works, the movie was horror and yet beautiful to behold.

Being set on a remote island, the filming conditions were quite brutal. Robert Pattinson would know all about it too well since he almost punched the director. Revealing some intense conditions, Pattinson stated that the movie was something unique that he was happy to be a part of.

When Robert Pattinson Almost Punched The Lighthouse Director

Shooting in Halifax, Nova Scotia, the weather conditions were terrible for filming. It was a bonus point for director Robert Eggers who wanted the intense conditions, but it was hell for the actors. Suffering from storms, strong winds, and crashing waves, Robert Pattinson had a hard time shooting the movie.

In an interview, the actor talked about his role in The Lighthouse. Since most of the scenes of Pattinson were shot outdoors, The Batman actor had to have the worst of the beating as the weather mercilessly poured down on the actor. And to top it all off, director Robert Eggers was pushing the actor to his limits at which point, Robert Pattinson almost felt like punching the director.

“That’s the closest I’ve come to punching a director. However much I love Robert [Eggers], there was a point where I did five takes walking across the beach, and after a while I was like, ‘What the f*** is going on? I feel like you’re just spraying a fire hose in my face.’ And he was like, ‘I am spraying a fire hose in your face.’ It was like some kind of torture. It definitely creates an interesting energy.”

This isn’t the first case of an actor physically hitting or threatening a director for pushing too hard. Tom Hardy, the actor known for his grunts and accents, once choked director Alejandro Iñárritu while filming the 2015 masterpiece The Revenant.

The Revenant was a 2015 masterpiece starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy in prominent roles. Shooting in cold wintery conditions, Hardy wanted to let off some steam and he asked director Alejandro Iñárritu to wrestle in front of the cast and crew.

“When things get a bit too serious, I go, ‘Why don’t we have a cuddle in front of all these people here?’ It ends with both of us falling down in the snow. I think that’s a good thing. If I’m the naughty boy for doing that, then I’d rather be the naughty boy and release that tension.”

A quick photo of Hardy choking the director was taken which the Peaky Blinders printed on a t-shirt and gave to the cast and crew mates of The Revenant. Suffice it to say, the weather conditions are solely responsible.

The Lighthouse, standing at a rating of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, is available to stream on Paramount+ in the U.S.
