Baldur’s Gate 3 is one of the best games in the industry for many different reasons, including its amazing companion characters. Each companion in the title is incredibly unique and comes with their own associated story beats that help them flesh out as deep and complex characters.
Larian Studios has given us more than a dozen possible companions in Baldur’s Gate 3, and while they are all great in their own right, some are hated to death among the community. One of the most despised companions in the game is none other than the charming Gale. Despite the character’s unpopularity, Larian has gone out of their way to give him an ending that makes everyone respect him even more.
Larian Developers Gave Gave An Ending That Makes Us Respect Him
While Gale is an incredibly charming companion who is quick to befriend players and eager to join them on their adventuring party, many in the community absolutely despise the character. Many players feel like he talks way too much and occasionally puts players down.
He is often labeled as an egomaniac who is completely insufferable and doesn’t deserve any respect for what he has with other characters in the game. Despite the hate bandwagon, many respect the character, considering his tragic ending.
Gale is possessed by a Netherese orb, which is an incredibly powerful magical artifact that needs to be constantly fed magical items. In Baldur’s Gate 3, players have the opportunity to detonate the Netherese orb before confronting Elder Brain. Gale can use the orb here and will teleport you and your companions to a safe space before blowing himself to destroy the Elder Brain.
In an interview with IGN, Baldur’s Gate 3 director Swen Vincke touched upon the various aspects of the game, including the controversial endings given to various companions. When it came to Gale’s heroic act and his tragic ending, here’s what he had to say:
We talked about that a lot… we talked about everything a lot. There’s very little that went into the game, even down to the individual lines, that we didn’t discuss. And with the Gale blowing himself up ending, there was so much we were like, “Logistically, how do we make this work?” And some of that then informs how you think about the scene visually and how you think about.
Even though Gale is one of the most hated companions in the game, it’s clear that Larian Studios carefully crafted his character. The developers gave him a sad ending, but he managed to earn everyone’s respect. There’s no heroic act that is better than taking one for the team and saving everyone else’s life.
Will Baldur’s Gate 3 Get a DLC or Sequel?
Since its release, Baldur’s Gate 3 has met with incredible success and even won the Game of the Year in 2023. Since then, all eyes have been on Larian, with players hoping that the developers will expand the base game with more DLCs or deliver a full-blown sequel.
Unfortunately, during the 2024 Game Developers Conference, the company confirmed that Baldur’s Gate 3 would not be getting any expansions or sequels. Vincke has revealed that the studio’s next game, whatever it ends up being, won’t have anything to do with Baldur’s Gate 3.
It’s undoubtedly disappointing news for Baldur’s Gate 3 fans, but it certainly looks like Larian isn’t done developing new content for the base game. It’s already been confirmed that we’re going to receive more updates and patches. If past trends continue, future updates could be as significant as introducing even more companions for the game!
