Christopher Nolan’s films are some of the most interesting and complex films that blend in mind-boggling concepts with relatable human conditions and emotions. Most of them present their protagonists being confronted with extraordinary situations and the struggle to overcome those becomes the crux of the narrative. Inception, Memento, The Prestige, Tenet, and The Dark Knight trilogy all present this overlying narrative in a unique Nolan-esque fashion.

One of Nolan’s most impressive films is his 2014 sci-fi epic Interstellar. The film had a memorable cameo from Matt Damon who catalyzed a big twist in the narrative of the film. Many people despised Damon’s character by the end of the film. But Nolan defended the character and acknowledged his understandable motives.

Christopher Nolan Defends Matt Damon’s Questionable Actions in Interstellar

Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar had Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway being sent to space in search of a habitable planet (exoplanet) after the Earth’s atmosphere becomes poisonous and hazardous for its residents. During their adventure, they are misled by Matt Damon‘s character by luring them into rescuing him and trying to run away in their spacecraft.

While audiences despised Damon’s character for causing serious damage to the crew and their mission, Nolan defended his actions as something humane and a naturally instinctive behavior based on Damon’s condition in the film. He told the Daily Beast,

“It’s very straightforward: selfishness and cowardice. It’s very human, and I love what Matt did with that; he found the reality of it. It’s the kind of sequence where you loathe the guy because he’s doing something that you feel you might wind up doing in a similar situation. It’s very logical, but the rationalization of it is extraordinary—the way he was able to rationalize his own cowardice into a positive thing. Loneliness and desperation will make us do crazy things.”

Damon’s character was merely finding a way to survive just like everyone else in the film. Although his actions are despicable and ruthless. it is indeed understandable and logical for a character like him who has had such a bleak experience on the ice planet for so long.

Christopher Nolan recently made an appearance at the City University of New York event where he talked about the success of Oppenheimer and the making of the film. He also talked about the ongoing actors strike in Hollywood and gave a shoutout to Taylor Swift’s new concert film as a significant example of showing how valuable movie theatres are. He said (via YouTube),

“Taylor Swift is about to show the studios because her concert film is not being distributed by the studios, it’s being distributed by a theater owner, AMC, and it’s going to make an enormous amount of money,” Nolan said. “And this is the thing, [theatrical exhibition is] a format and a way of seeing things and sharing stories, or sharing experiences, that’s incredibly valuable. And if [the studios] don’t want it, somebody else will. So that’s just the truth of it.”

Swift’s Eras Tour concert film is breaking and creating records, already becoming a successful venture during its first weekend of release. It shows the power of a film that provides a wholesome experience and solidifies the fact that a great piece of work will be celebrated by fans whether it is distributed by big studios or not.
