Lords of the Fallen is a brand-new Souls-like game developed by Hexworks. The title may seem familiar since 2014 had its own version of Lords of the Fallen, developed by Deck13 and CI Games. So, is it a sequel? Yes, since the story does continue 1000 years after the events of the first game.

The game can even be considered a remake in certain ways. According to PC Gamer, the older engine was dropped, and a graphical overhaul was welcomed thanks to Unreal Engine 5. However, the story and characters are set in the same universe, carrying over the legacy of the demon God Adyr.

Lords of the Fallen – Is the Setting Different This Time?

Lord of the Fallen’s immaculate combat system makes for unique gameplay.

The new Lords of the Fallen takes a grand approach to a familiar world. The novelty is embarked by a story that’s written a thousand years after the event of the first game, where demon God Adyr is rekindling evil with a thirst for vengeance, and the player needs to go against him.

Unlike the previous game, players are introduced to a new character-building system with over 13 player classes (4 of which are ‘secret’) to choose from. In the last entry, players took on the role of Harkyn.

The non-linear take on the new Lords of the Fallen leads players to three unique endings. And, within this journey, they are introduced to two realms that play a major part in shaping gameplay and skill set. The game brings two landscapes, Axiom and Umbral. Axiom is the default world where players will spend most of their time and resources, while Umbral is the land of nightmares. Both of these worlds, in their entirety, are open to exploration and puzzle-solving. They have unique enemies and secrets to uncover.

The game offers you a ‘lamp’, which is an integral part of its gameplay. This lets you traverse between the two worlds. Other than dying and being teleported to another realm, you can do the same by activating the lamp’s ability, ‘Umbral Rift’. Early in the game, you will also learn the ability, ‘Soulflay’, which helps you with combat by extracting the souls of enemies from their bodies.

Lords of the Fallen – Freshness in Familiarity

Lords of the Fallen co-op mode
Lords of the Fallen has a co-op mode that allows you to traverse different realms along with other players.

Unreal Engine 5’s capabilities are clearly taken advantage of, and the new game has a plethora of new content compared to the older entry. According to the devs, players can expect 30 boss battles and three unique ways of completing the storyline. Furthermore, the game offers 194 shields and weapons, and 339 armor pieces among the 13 different player classes as mentioned earlier.

Additionally, the availability of co-op ensures the versatile nature of exploration and combat remains open to all types of players. It doesn’t have to be a lonesome journey, right? Much of this newness is possible thanks to the fluidity between Axiom and Umbral, and the lamp that lets you experiment with gameplay. For each player, based on their personalized character traits and weapons of choice, exploration feels new and rewarding.

Combining different playstyles and switching between weapons is the key to making your gameplay engaging and giving you one of the three unique endings. If you’re wondering whether you will miss out on another possible ending, worry not, as there is a New Game Plus (NG+) option that lets you experience the game again after finishing it. Just like a lot of Souls-like games, NG+ lets players replay the game but with a strong sense of familiarity, exploring secrets and places they didn’t brave before.
