The Mad Max films take place in a dystopian wasteland ravaged by scarcity and violence. With high-octane car chases, inventive weaponry, and ruthless warlords, the franchise has all an action fan needs. Fans are gearing up for another descent into this unforgiving world as a new chapter in the Mad Max saga will make its way to theaters later this year.
“Furiosa”, a prequel centered around the iconic character from “Mad Max: Fury Road” will see Anya Taylor-Joy portray the character alongside Chris Hemsworth in the cast. To further add to the excitement, the movie’s rating certificate is exactly what fans want from a Mad Max movie.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga Is Rated R For Strong Violence and Grisly Images
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will hit theatres later this year and is a prequel to the 2015 movie. This prequel dives deep into the past of Furiosa, the warrior played by Charlize Theron in “Fury Road.” Theron is not reprising the role and Anya Taylor-Joy will step into the role of a younger Furiosa. Joining her on this post-apocalyptic adventure is Chris Hemsworth, whose character details are shrouded in mystery for now.
Now, for the news that will have Mad Max fans cheering: Furiosa has been given an R rating. That means the movie won’t hold back on the brutal realities of this ravaged world. Per Filmratings.com, the Motion Picture Association has given an R-rated certificate to the movie “for sequences of strong violence, and grisly images“.
The R rating is a sign that the filmmakers haven’t toned things down for a more mainstream audience. Fans can get ready for a full-fledged Mad Max experience added with the brilliance of Taylor-Joy and Hemsworth.
Only One Movie From The Mad Max Franchise Is Not Rated R
Created by George Miller and Byron Kennedy, Mad Max roared onto screens in 1979 with the original “Mad Max.” This Australian film, starring a then-unknown Mel Gibson, depicted a near-future Australia ravaged by resource wars and societal collapse. The huge success of the film spawned two sequels The Road Warrior (1981) and Thunderdome (1985).
The series took a long hiatus before returning with a bang in 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road, and after almost a decade returns with Furiosa. Decades have passed since the first movie, but the dystopian cinema of Mad Max is still thriving on ruthless actions, as evident by its collection of R-rated certificates.
Thunderdome (1985) is the only movie that was not rated R. This movie’s slightly toned-down approach secured it a PG-13 rating. However, do not expect any such approach from Furiosa which promises some really violent sequences. The movie will premiere on May 15 at the Cannes Festival and release on May 24.
