For decades, the Mad Max franchise has brought the outer reaches of chaos and imagination within the audience’s reach. From the brain of George Miller was born an apocalyptic wasteland that can neither be defined as dysfunctional nor dystopian since Mad Max has always existed within a framework of structured madness.

With Imperators, War Boys, Crow Fishers, and Buzzards populating and running wild on the wasteland, the world of Mad Max is devoid of limits. As such, to continue to explore such a world would mean breaking down its mystical elements and essentially making it redundant. The best solution in such a scenario is to quit while one’s still ahead and keep the legacy of Mel Gibson, George Miller, Charlize Theron, and Tom Hardy intact.

If one were to ever kill off successful franchises or established intellectual properties, one need not look any further than Hugh Jackman’s career-defining role as Wolverine in James Mangold’s Logan  Constructed with beauty and grace, the film fits perfectly in the ‘Swan Song’ category since it neither parades the mutant around in a slideshow presentation of his life’s best and greatest moments nor does it under-serve the plot’s originality for the sake of giving him an epic, heroic exit.

George Miller needs to take a pointer or two from the Jackman sequel and call an end to Mel Gibson’s epic saga as the actor slowly recedes to the background of Hollywood’s consciousness while the franchise continues to flourish under younger actors. After passing the torch from Gibson to Hardy, Charlize Theron does the same as Anya Taylor-Joy continues the saga of Imperator Furiosa in a prequel that looks no less epic in vision and scale than the 6 times Oscar winner, Fury Road.

Mad Max Should Come Full Circle With Mel Gibson

Despite the modern society’s need to move faster than the eye can process, often a bit of delayed gratification goes a long way. Mel Gibson’s removal from the Hollywood mainframe might ultimately find its perfect ending if the actor were to return in one last ride across the desert wasteland. In a Logan-styled ending for the disgraced actor, a swan song for his most phenomenal role will be the perfect salve for a necessary return to the world of box office blockbusters without hurting the public sentiment.

As Anya Taylor-Joy takes on the role of Imperator Furiosa and the Mad Max franchise seems to be growing younger by the day, George Miller has to finish his story the way he always intended to. With any future cameos ruled out, there cannot be a more definitive time for a solo film starring Gibson riding off into the sunset with the War Boys charging into the sandstorm behind him.
