Sydney Sweeney has had multiple releases in the past few months, with varying degrees of success. However, Sweeney’s 2024 seemed to have gone off on a rocky start with the release of Madame Web. The actress played the role of Julia Carpenter, a future Spider-Woman who comes in contact with other Spider-Women and Madame Web. The film was trolled for its campy dialogue and shoddy VFX even when the trailer was released, but the film’s release took the trolling to a whole new level.

Even Sydney Sweeney seemed to have given up all pretense and joined in on the fun with her Saturday Night Live monologue. The actress hosted an episode earlier this week as she promoted her upcoming debut production venture Immaculate. She said in her monologue,

“You might have seen me in ‘Anyone But You’ or ‘Euphoria’ — you definitely did not see me in ‘Madame Web.’”

The joke gave her applause and support from fans as they appreciated Sweeney’s sportiveness to join in on the joke. However, some fans were supportive of the film and went on to say that she was too harsh.

How Bad Was Madame Web?

With so many trolling the Sony Spider-Man Universe film Madame Web, including lead actor Sydney Sweeney joining in on the fun, one has to wonder how bad the movie was to warrant such hate. The film went viral on social media for its terrible writing and overall experience. The SSU has not had a decently reviewed film in its roster since Venom.

Madame Web currently has a 13% Rotten Tomatoes critic score, with a 57% audience score. Many reviews pointed at the film’s writing, especially the dialogues as the main flaw. It was written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, who have previously written equally panned films such as Dracula Untold, Morbius, Gods of Egypt, and Power Rangers.

Reviews also had an issue with the way the film introduced Spider-Man characters such as Ben Parker and Mary Parker, who were played by Adam Scott and Emma Roberts respectively. The film had been a subject of trolls since its trailer was released and the dialogues from Dakota Johnson became meme fodder.
