Henry Cavill appeared for one last time as Clark Kent / Superman in the 2022 DCEU movie, Black Adam. Soon after, James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC studios and announced the DC Universe (DCU) as a reboot for DCEU. Cavill was let go from the role along with Ben Affleck as Batman. Recently, David Corenswet, who surprisingly looks like Cavill, was cast as the new DCU Superman.

Aldis Hodge played Carter Hall / Hawkman, a member of the Justice Society of America, in Black Adam. Hodge, earlier in 2022, also voiced the role of John Stewart’s Green Lantern in the DC animated film, Green Lantern: Beware My Power. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the Underground actor shared about the secrecy maintained by the DC studios. The City on a Hill actor revealed that he was unaware of several details about the movie until well into its production.

One of the details in Black Adam that was kept from him until the reshoots of the film was the involvement of Viola Davis. The Black Mirror actor expressed his excitement of sharing the screen again with the Oscar-winning actress. However, the biggest surprise to Hodge was the return of Henry Cavill as Superman. When asked when he learned about Superman’s appearance, The Invisible Man actor told The Hollywood Reporter:

“Pretty close to the premiere. They kept that all the way under wraps, and I didn’t know until maybe a day or two before the premiere. So they kept it that close. […] There was no talk of bringing back Superman and any of that. They’ve got to keep those things in a super vault, so all you can do is focus on trying to make Black Adam the best it can be.”

Interestingly, it was Dwayne Johnson, who played the titular character in Black Adam, who pulled the strings that resulted in Cavill’s cameo. Hodge noted that while actors often hear rumors on sets, nothing was ever confirmed when it comes to DC.

Henry Cavill’s Cameo Came Was A Pleasant Surprise For Fans

Before Black Adam cameo, Henry Cavill’s last appearance as the Kryptonian superhero was in Justice League. There was a long gap between this appearance and his next one, although fans were treated to more of Superman in the Snyder Cut version of Justice League released in 2021. During the time of Justice League’s release, rumors spread that Cavill might not return for another DCEU film.

This made the appearance in Black Adam a delightful surprise for fans. However, this joy was followed by disappointment for fans of the Man of Steel actor, as Cavill exited from the role shortly after, with the announcement of a new DCU. Other than Superman’s return, there was little excitement surrounding the Dwayne Johnson film, which failed miserably at the box office.

Aldis Hodge’s future in the DCU also remains uncertain, and he may not reprise his role as Hawkman. However, the Leverage: Redemption actor has some promising projects under his belt. Hodge will play Detective Alex Cross in the upcoming Amazon Prime Video series, Cross. This iconic book-based role was earlier played by Morgan Freeman and Tyler Perry in different film adaptations.
