During an episode of his show, David Letterman revealed while welcoming his show’s much-awaited guest Cher that

“We’ve wanted to have this woman on the show for four years, how many times we asked her, how many separate communications have we launched from our office to her, at least 81 we’ve asked her to be on the show 81 times.” 

But why did Cher kept avoiding appearing in Letterman’s show? Perhaps it was Letterman’s reputation as a tough interviewer where he often turned rouge while asking questions to his guests. When asked Cher, about the reason she turned down the appearance on the show numerous times, her response was indeed blunt. Cher said,

“I thought I would never want to do this show with you,” the star began, only to be immediately interrupted by Letterman, “Why, because you thought I was…,” the host asked. “An as-hole,” Cher responded.

While Letterman is aware of his reputation in the industry, he didn’t expect a guest to point him out like that, that too when the show is on the air. The audience in attendance was also startled by Cher’s reply and naturally, they all gasped, then booed at her response. 

Further, Cher clarified that she had no hard feelings for the host rather she was a fan of his show, but due to his outspoken behavior with his guests, Cher decided to avoid the offer to appear on the show several times.

On May 22, 1986, Cher made her debut appearance on David Letterman‘s show. As revealed by Letterman the actress turned down the appearance on the show several times. But what ultimately pushed her to accept the Letterman’s request?

During the conversation with Letterman, Cher jokingly said that someone on the show agreed to pay her huge hotel bill if she agreed to appear on the show. According to People, the actress shared,

Perhaps it was just the first time hesitation Cher had while appearing on the talk show, as after that she made several appearances on Letterman’s show.
