Helldivers 2, the third-person co-op shooter title by Arrowhead Game Studios, was released for PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam on February 8 and has been an immense success. The game has become the first major live-service game to impress players in a long time.

Helldivers 2 is the sequel to the top-down shooter title Helldivers, which was released back on March 3, 2015, exclusively for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation Vita. A PC version was also released later in December 2015. Helldivers is dubbed one of the best top-down shooters.
Even though the game lacked a bigger map and had kind of repetitive missions, it still provided players with countless hours of fun. The game initially had a single difficulty option, but more were later added when the game built a strong audience.
However, players could choose different levels of planets they wanted for the missions. The gameplay is simple; players need to choose their weapons and where they want to be deployed. Then they sneak into places filled with enemies and complete the objectives assigned. After the objectives are achieved, players call a dropship to escape and complete the mission.
Helldivers received positive reviews from fans and critics alike and was praised for its co-op mechanics, among other things. Fast forward eight years: Helldivers 2 was announced in May 2023 and finally released on February 8, 2024, nearly nine years after its predecessor. The success of Helldivers has majorly contributed to the hit that the sequel is right now.
Helldivers 2 Has Been A Colossal Success
Helldivers 2 launched to positive reviews and has been touted as the best co-op game out there. The game was in development for a long time, and the shift from top-down shooter to third-person shooter has paid off as it has broken multiple records since its release. The game recorded over 150,000 concurrent users on Steam and became the best PC release from PlayStation Studios.
Helldivers 2 sold over a million copies in just three days of its release and has sold over 3 million copies as of February 25, 2024. The game has recorded an all-time peak of 458,709 players, with the 24-hour peak being 431,621, with 165,977 players playing the game at the time of writing. The developers at Arrowhead Game Studios themselves did not see any of this coming.
Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt said that the game was “blowing through the estimates,” which is true as the game suffered significant server issues. However, the developer sorted it out as they raised player caps, and the players are now having the time of their lives with the game, unlike any other live service has ever done.
