After starring in a few roles in Australian cinema, Margot Robbie moved to Hollywood in search of her big break. She was lucky and incredibly talented, as she landed a leading role alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street. Robbie played Naomi Lapaglia, Jordan Belfort’s mistress-turned-second wife, and shared a few intimate scenes with DiCaprio. The Barbie actress revealed that it was her first time filming an entire s*x scene in a film.
Robbie performed a daring act to land the role when she slapped the Titanic actor across the face in an improvised audition scene. Scorsese was thoroughly impressed with Robbie’s performance and cast her in the movie. The film and Robbie went on to earn critical acclaim.
Margot Robbie Says The Wolf Of Wall Street Scene Was Her First Proper S*x Scene
With her recent release, Barbie, Margot Robbie, established herself as the most sought-after actress in the industry. Robbie had a steadily growing career in Hollywood, starting with her portrayal as the s*x symbol in The Wolf of Wall Street. Before her Hollywood career, she was a household name in Australia due to her role as Donna Freedman in the soap opera Neighbours.
Robbie opened up about her role in The Wolf of Wall Street in a 2016 interview with Vanity Fair, where she discussed her s*x and n*de scenes in the film. She revealed that in her first Australian low-budget film, Vigilante, she had filmed a shower scene where she was practically n*ked. She had also filmed scenes leading into s*x or after s*x in her previous roles.
However, she disclosed that the completely n*ked, start-to-finish s*x scene in The Wolf of Wall Street was her first proper s*x scene in any film. She also revealed that many people were watching her during the scene, which made it very awkward. The I, Tonya actor told Vanity Fair:
“Actually, I hadn’t done a proper s*x scene before. I’d done scenes where it’s leading into s*x or s*x has just finished, but I hadn’t done a start-to-finish s*x scene like I did in Wolf. That was my first. […] Tons of people are watching you. It’s so awkward.”
When the interviewer further asked whether she was anxious about not being able to do the scene, Robbie responded that she didn’t have a choice. In another interview with Porter Magazine in 2018, she revealed that she had to film the scenes in a “tiny bedroom” with 30 all-male crew members crammed in. She added that she filmed her scenes for nearly 17 hours.
Margot Robbie Insisted On Baring It All For The Film
Interestingly, the Suicide Squad actress revealed in a 2014 interview with The Telegraph that she insisted on the n*de scene in the film. Before the film, Robbie was concerned about her n*de body being on the internet forever. Martin Scorsese offered to film the scene with a robe for her comfort, but she turned down the director’s offer.
Robbie explained that n*dity just for the sake of it was disgusting. However, she shared that the scene in the movie required her to get naked, as the character Naomi Lapaglia used her body as a form of currency. The character used her n*ked body to seduce Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jordan Belfort. Robbie shared with The Telegraph:
“The whole point of [her character] Naomi is that her body is her only form of currency in this world. So when Marty [Scorsese] was trying to help me out, and said in the scene where she seduces Jordan perhaps I could have a robe on, I said she wouldn’t. She has to be naked. She’s laying her cards on the table.”
The film, made on a $100 million budget, went on to gross $406.9 million at the box office. Despite facing some severe body image issues due to media scrutiny, Margot Robbie became a breakout star in Hollywood with her role. The Wolf of Wall Street is now available for streaming on Prime Video.
