Rumors about the name of Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, a new Skydance New Media game about Captain America and Black Panther, did not overly excite fans. However, the State of Unreal at GDC (Game Developers Conference) confirmed this name with a new CGI trailer.

This amazing trailer shows the power of the Unreal Engine 5 in action. This title has four different characters to use and is the first title for one of the creators of Uncharted and Legacy of Kain, Amy Hennig. Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra will be released sometime in 2025.

After the rumored name for this game, fans were not very confident about Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, but the trailer cleared all the doubts with a lot of action and a very good narrative full of secrets and espionage. Players will control a previous version of Black Panther, a soldier, a spy from Wakanda, and Captain America. All with their own combat mechanics. This will be the first game developed by the new studio, Skydance New Media. With former Naughty Dog Executive Amy Hennig, who works in games like Uncharted and Legacy of Kain.

The trailer was full of references to the comics and movies, with one particular comparison between Black Panther and Captain America at the end of the trailer that was a reminder of Captain America: Civil War of the MCU, where Tony and Steve clashed in promotional materials for the film. This version of Black Panther is the grandfather of T’Challa, Azzurri, who, whilst not the current Black Panther, is steeped in comic history as well.

This soldier will probably be a member of the Howling Commandos, the elite squadron that Captain America was a member of in the movies and comics. The spy from Wakanda seems to be part of the Royal Guard of the Wakandan King, the Dora Milaje, something that has been heavily referenced in the MCU to date.

Even a throwaway comment from Captain America mentioning “two too many” is a hint towards one of Cap’s franchise-long villains in Red Skull. After all, with that title it’d be wasted if Red Skull doesn’t make an appearance. Whilst it wouldn’t necessarily be comic accurate, it’d also make for a fun fight to go against his daughter, Sin, too.

Skydance New Media will go for linear gameplay in Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra

The game poster’s art suggests that the majority of Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra will take place in Wakanda and France during the Second World War. There will be a back and forth between these two places. Gabriel Jones will be the soldier from the Howling Commandos, and Nanali will be this Wakandian spy.

Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra will be directed by Amy Hennig, a former executive from Naughty Dog who was behind several of the Uncharted games and the cult game Legacy of Kain. The project has a lot of talent behind it, and the fact that it is not a live-service title can give hope to the fans that it’ll be good.

I'm a big fan of movies and videogames in general. I really love Pokémon and Godzilla. One of my favorite games is The Last of Us, Part II. A compelling and well-written story is always welcome.
