If recent news regarding Marvel Rivals is true, console-owning Marvel fans may be left in the dark. According to a recent Reddit rumor post, Marvel’s upcoming game may be a PC and mobile exclusive.
Recent news circling the web seems to point to a sign-up portal to playtest Marvel’s upcoming title, however, the advertisement only mentions Steam, with no nod to any consoles. Although that alone may not be cause for concern for the humble console gaming crowd, the playtest portal is concerned mostly with titles that are PC and mobile-related.
What is the upcoming PvP game, Marvel Rivals?
According to the official Marvel website:
Marvel Rivals is a Super Hero team-based PVP shooter! Assemble an all-star Marvel squad, devise countless strategies by combining powers to form unique Team-Up skills and fight in destructible, ever-changing battlefields across the continually evolving Marvel Universe!
A collaborative effort between Marvel and NetEase Games, Marvel Rivals is described as a “Super Hero Team-Based PVP Shooter”. Developers promise a fast-paced and varied battlefield featuring fan-favorite heroes and villains duking it out within the confines of the Marvel Multiverse.
The main feature of the game seems to be unlocking synergistic abilities between teammates and altering the environment itself via varied superpowers. Destructible and interactable environments are the most unique aspect Marvel Rivals offers.

Marvel’s Recent Track Record With Games and Its Potential to Focus on PC and Mobile
Marvel has a unique track record of video game releases, from massive hits like Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man series to misses like the FGC-panned Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite. The last massive multiplayer game released by Marvel, entitled Marvel’s Avengers, was met with mixed reviews by critics. Critics noted fun but repetitive gameplay, a flat story, technical issues, and a microtransaction-based loot system that chose quantity over quality.
But on a positive note, players appreciated the camaraderie and interactions among the characters and found the hero customization and combat gameplay loop enjoyable. This is an aspect of gameplay that Marvel Rivals can emphasize and improve upon. However, Marvel’s Avengers saw a massive release not just on PC but on current-gen and last-gen consoles as well.
With Marvel Studios hitting a couple of snags with their recent string of MCU movies and the poor response to the Avengers game, Marvel desperately needs a new hit on their hands to inject momentum back into their brand.
For that reason, ditching console fans for PC and mobile may not deliver the hype and impetus Marvel Games needs to get back on track. There’s a saying in the comic book-collecting world that readers will buy issues of Spider-Man no matter what.
