Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, the sequel to Insomniac Games’ 2018 web-swinging adventure, has become one of the best PlayStation 5 exclusives of 2023. Along with amazing set pieces and action sequences, the game featured a strong narrative that kept people gripped from the get-go.

The events led to a pretty satisfactory ending, one that tied up most loose ends and kept some open for obvious expansions or closure in a future game. However, a few subtle hints placed in the game have given rise to a fan theory that is not pure conjecture.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 May Hint at a New Spider-Man in the Next Installment

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 could be hinting at the villain for the next game.

The theory comes from r/SpidermanPS4 and hints that the Superior Spider-Man may be included, to some degree, in the next part of the game. u/Jaimemarvel posted a zoomed-in picture of the suit menu within the game. They observe that while all the other suit thumbnails are facing off to the right side, the Super Suit thumbnail is the only one directly facing the player.

While this by itself doesn’t create a strong case, there is another bit of foreshadowing (quite literally). Spoiler warning for anyone who has not completed the game. In the post-credit cutscene for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, we see Norman Osborn walking through the Raft facility to the holding cell of Otto Octavius.

The clip is setting the stage for the next game, with Otto ominously stating he is writing “the final chapter.” It’s in this scene where we see his face lit from below, and the shadows from his glasses appear to take the same shape as the eyes from Spider-Man’s suit.

For those who are not aware, Superior Spider-Man is Otto Octavius, after he implants his brain into the body of Peter Parker. This happens as a continuation of the 2012 storyline titled “Dying Wish,” when Peter, on his deathbed, asks Otto to take over his body and the mantle of Spider-Man. To show he could be even better than the original hero, Otto takes on the role but calls himself the Superior Spider-Man.

A Superior Spider-Man Appearance Comes with Serious Implications

Will the next game be Peter's last swing?
Will the next game be Peter’s last swing?

If Superior Spider-Man truly is going to be in Spider-Man 3, and Insomniac is going to stay true to the source material, it would imply Peter Parker will meet his end. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 propped up Miles in a big way, with his narrative arc at times overshadowing even Peter’s tryst with the symbiote. The end of the game also hinted at a new Spider-hero joining the ranks: Cindy Moon, a.k.a. Silk.

Three Spider heroes in one game sounds great, but it could also mean the role of the central Spidey may be changing hands. Whether that someone else is Otto, Miles, or Silk remains to be seen.

Cassidy Butch, the host of the symbiote Carnage, also has an unfinished questline. It’s not yet clear if the quest will be part of a larger DLC piece, like the first game’s expansions, or if Carnage will be one of the villains in the next game.

Gaming was one of my earliest passions then along came writing, and here we are. I've been in the content creation space for several years now and as gamer for even longer. From understanding the complexities of a multilayer narrative to the simply joy of "big gun go boom", my goal is to capture all the emotions in between and put them down in an engaging manner.
