The Avengers: Infinity War chronicle might have ended, but the theories surrounding the characters and subsequent films still keep coming. Thanos was the main villain of the saga, and he wreaked havoc across the galaxy. As the Mad Titan went on a rampage to achieve his goals, the Avengers did everything in their power to stop him. Unfortunately, the heroes failed, and half of them got obliterated along with half the universe during the Blip.
Thanos was the classic villain who brought the Avengers to their knees. While his actions to restore balance to the universe were certainly extreme, what if he was driven by something else? A new theory suggests that it might have been because he was a Deviant.
Was Thanos a brainwashed Deviant?
Even though Chloe Zhao’s film Eternals was divisive, it introduced the guardians of Earth, the Eternals. These are cosmic beings created by the Celestial Arishem the Judge, in the Great Forge. They were tasked with saving the planet from Deviants, a species of predators that consume life forms.
The Mad Titan’s background is never fully explored in the MCU. However, the new theory suggests that Thanos was part of an Eternals team that was sent to Titan to protect the planet. Eros, also known as Starfox, was part of this group as well. Their role was very similar to the part that Ajak’s team played on Earth.
As this group fought the Deviants on Titan for centuries, they slowly started losing the war against them. The Deviants themselves started looking more humanoid as time passed, until one of them finally got the better of the Titan and killed him. In doing so, the being absorbed all of his powers and personality.
Eros managed to wipe Deviant-Thanos’ mind and still loved him like a brother. But even though the being retained his memories, he was driven to destroy half the life forms. This new theory is surely very compelling, since in the comics, Thanos does indeed have a Deviant gene in him. However, there is one major flaw.
Why does this theory have no legs to stand on?
While the Mad Titan does carry a Deviant gene, which is the reason behind his ugly and misshapen look, he was born to two Eternals, A’Lars and Sui-San. This makes him one as well.
In Chloe Zhao‘s film, Sersi makes it very clear that they can only fight Deviants. Since the Mad Titan was technically not one, they could not stand up to him. Moreover, the Celestials had instructed them not to interfere in matters of human conflict.
While Thanos’ plans certainly affected more than just humans, they also proved to pour water into the Celestials’ plans for Emergence. The Emergence is a phenomenon that gives birth to a Celestial by destroying the planet. In the case of Earth, the Emergence would have seen the rise of Tiamut the Communicator.
The Marvel movies have made a lasting impression on movie lovers. The unending theories are a sign of their impact on pop culture.
