Spider-Man Defies His Core Principle in Avengers: Endgame

The Peter Parker/Spider-Man of the Marvel Cinematic Universe aka Tom Holland was first introduced to the audience in 2016 during the contentious events of Captain America: Civil War when he first walked down the halls of his Queens apartment and straight into Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) flirting with Aunt May (Marisa Tomei). The faux father-son bond that was formed between Iron Man and his young Spider-ling protégé later gave way to the Iron Spider Armor suit that was introduced in the epic Infinity Saga film, Avengers: Infinity War.

During the events of Infinity War, the Iron Spider Armor helped Spiderman not only survive outer space but also fight against Thanos on his home planet, Titan. 5 years later, when he was resurrected by the Blip, Spiderman again used the Iron Spider Armor to foil the alternate timeline Thanos’ plans during the Battle of Earth. But in doing so, he first had to grab the Nano Gauntlet from Black Panther and deliver it to the Quantum Tunnel in order to swap it with Thanos’ Infinity Gauntlet.

However, he was quickly overrun by an army of Outriders who swarmed him and would have killed him if he hadn’t taken drastic measures to protect himself. In a battle where the Avengers could hardly regroup or assemble to look out for each other, the “Activate Instant Kill” was the only way to make sure he survived the trip across the battlefield. The command then activated the armor’s Instant-Kill mode that used the armored spider legs to immediately destroy any Outrider that got within range.

Dan Slott’s Criticism Against Spider-Man Killing

Comic book writer, Dan Slott, had fervently disagreed with the entire “Activate Instant Kill” decision of Spiderman during the Battle of Earth. His claims were founded on the core principle of Spiderman that defines the friendly neighborhood superhero teenager from taking any life, no matter how grave the circumstances may be.

However, soon after the fans swarmed him with criticism about how irrational such a core principle would be in a station as drastic as the battle against Thanos, he also quickly retweeted in his defense saying it was all just his personal opinion and that he had nothing against the fans who held any opposing opinion.
