Both Amy Pascal and Kevin Feige are eager to bring back Tom Holland’s Spider-Man for a fourth film following the massive success of Spider-Man: No Way Home. While there are rumors of Holland and Zendaya returning, it appears that Jon Watts may be stepping away from the franchise. A new director’s name has recently emerged, exciting Marvel fans. Drew Goddard, the creator of Netflix’s Daredevil, is the name under consideration.
Interestingly, when Sony and Marvel finalized the deal to share the rights to Spider-Man, it was reported that Goddard was in talks with Sony for the reboot film. Earlier, Goddard had also planned to direct a Sinister Six movie for Sony within The Amazing Spider-Man universe.
Tom Holland’s Spider-Man 4 May Get Drew Goddard As Its New Director
According to insider Daniel Richtman, Spider-Man director Jon Watts has not agreed to return for a fourth film. Richtman also reported that both Sony and Marvel are exploring other directors, with one rumored name being Drew Goddard. Goddard created the Netflix show Daredevil, and served as the executive producer and writer for two episodes.
Goddard was considered for the directorial duties when the Spider-Man deal was signed between Sony and Marvel. The Lost writer was also rumored to be Kevin Feige’s favorite to direct Spider-Man if Watts ever decided to step away. The association between Goddard and Marvel dates back to Joss Whedon’s Avengers movies, where Goddard contributed uncredited work to the scripts.
In addition to Netflix’s Daredevil, Goddard also served as the executive producer for The Defenders. He also wrote one episode for the show, which featured Marvel heroes Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. Goddard’s involvement is particularly exciting as Charlie Cox is rumored to reprise his role as Daredevil in the film.
Rumors suggest that Sony intends to develop a new trilogy centered more around SSU characters after Tom Holland’s character was erased from everyone’s memories in the last film. However, Holland has hinted on multiple occasions that he wants to move on to other roles. As for Marvel, the studio plans to establish Spider-Man and Daredevil as ground-level heroes.
Drew Goddard’s Portfolio Is Enough For Fans To Get Excited
Goddard received an Academy Award nomination for penning the script of The Martian. Interestingly, he was also initially set to direct the project but opted to direct the scrapped Sinister Six project for Sony. His writing credits include acclaimed series such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Alias, and Lost. He also penned scripts for films like Cloverfield and World War Z.
His directorial debut was the 2012 comedy horror film, The Cabin in the Woods. His other directorial venture was the star-studded film, Bad Times at the El Royale, released in 2018. More recently, Variety reported in February 2023 that Goddard was one of several writers brought together by James Gunn to shape the overarching story for the DC universe.
At this point, several rumors are circulating on the internet regarding Tom Holland’s Spider-Man 4. Goddard’s addition has the potential to introduce characters like Wilson Fisk and Jessica Jones into the web-slinger’s world. The Spider-Man Home trilogy is now available for streaming on Starz.
