Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has been released for less than a week and as expected, it is the opinion of many fans that the game is their Game of the Year. The hype for the game has been intense and saw the game sell 2.5 million copies of the game in the first 24 hours of release, with fans desperate to experience the next chapter in the Peter Parker storyline.

However, it seems that the latest installment of the web-slinging adventure did not sit well with one player. The individual was highly critical of a specific side-mission and decided to post their narrow-minded views to the masses on social media, only serving to highlight how ridiculous the comments were.

What Was Said About Marvel’s Spider-Man 2?

The character of Hailey Cooper was first introduced in Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

The player going by the handle @picassosenemy took to social media site X (formerly known as Twitter), to voice how they did not appreciate the latest side-mission in which you play as a deaf black girl. The character of Hailey Cooper first appeared in Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and communicated with Miles through sign language.

Now in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Hailey’s character plays the love interest of Miles Morales and has a side mission in which she uses her talent as a street artist to spray graffiti on various walls. The experience of playing the character of Hailey is made more realistic by having muted audio so that players can learn what is like to be hearing-impaired.

The so-called ‘fan’ states that they picked up the game to play as Spider-Man and then used homophobic language to describe what they think of the side mission. The post received considerable backlash and rightly so with the OP now trying to defend themselves against the prejudicial bile that they spouted on social media.

Unfortunately, @picassosenemy was not the only person who took issue with this side-mission and many racist comments have appeared in reaction to this. It is disgusting that people feel that their vile and venomous views need to be directed at something that is being used to highlight inclusivity in video games.

It is disrespectful to hearing-impaired people that these comments are being made and dismissed as ‘woke’ or part of the ‘woke culture’. Racism and prejudice are not welcome in the gaming community and if you have these views and have decided to make them public, then you need to take a long hard look at yourself.

Whilst it is to be expected that racist and prejudicial comments will appear online in this day and age, these keyboard warriors are making an issue out of what is an ‘optional’ side mission. The fact that these knuckle-draggers are so put out by this only shows how petty they are in slinging vile comments against someone who is hearing-impaired.

It is unfortunate for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 that the inclusivity of the game which it should be celebrated for, has stirred the hornet’s nest of bitterness amongst the undesirables. Having Rainbow and Ukrainian flags outside buildings, an abundance of diversity with various cultures, gender identities, and sexual orientations, and generally people living their lives the way they should, has rattled the cages of the bigots.

How has your experience been on Marvel’s Spider-Man 2?

The gaming community should be inclusive to all and dismissing a part of a game that highlights the struggles of others just because it doesn’t appeal to you, only goes against everything that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was trying to achieve by having this segment in the game.

Unfortunately, there will always be these narrow-minded views when any sort of diversity is introduced into a much-loved franchise. Whilst people are entitled to their own opinions, using homophobic language in this day and age just shows the mentality of the person using it and simply put, is unacceptable.
