With Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 release just around the corner, critic reviews have dropped and it seems like the game outshines its predecessors, Spider-Man and Miles Morales are amazing games. Critics have applauded Insomniac for delivering an incredible title with the pressure of doing better than the previous game which is one of the best superhero games of all time.

The developer seems to have understood the game’s story and gameplay as it does almost everything better than Marvel’s Spider-Man making it an amazing sequel. In its review of the game, ComicBook’s Cade Onder stated:

Ultimately, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 captures the essence of the character on a micro and macro level. We get big, epic set pieces infused with personal stakes, spectacular combat, the amazing web-swinging that every kid dreams of, and a story that tests Miles Morales and Peter Parker on both physical and mental levels.

However, the game has also been accused of being overstuffed as the story takes quite some time to start and players get to spend time with Peter and Miles before it starts to kick. Eurogamer’s Chris Tapsell says, “At once a little simple and a little over-stuffed, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is still above all a game of immense charm and fluid, free-form style.”

Spider-Man 2 is said to have repetitive activities in now bigger New York with the addition of two new areas.

Although Spider-Man 2 is praised for being a spectacular sequel as Insomniac keeps doing better with the series, the game is also said to have fallen short in its open world. The open world of the game is made bigger with the addition of Queens and Brooklyn but it reportedly has the same repetitive tasks. IGN’s Simon Cardy described the game as:

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 delivers Insomniac’s best tale yet, and despite its open world falling short, is a reliably fun superhero power trip.

Spider-Man 2 has “more of the same” as previous games in the series as GameSpot’s Jordan Ramée said in his review but it is a good sign as the story continues focusing on the original game and Miles Morales. Moreover, even after that Insomniac has done well with the game with the improved combat and traversal mechanics.

The boss battles though praised have also been disappointing for some who don’t like the approach Insomniac has taken with this. The bosses have several stages and they get more powerful stage after stage. The Guardian‘s Keith Stuart said:

Most boss battles really outstay their welcome, piling on stage after stage of sequentially tougher action when a couple of phases would have been plenty.

The game also disappoints some with its focus on Peter Parker and somewhat leaving Miles Morales behind.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 also disappointed some with its main focus on Peter Parker. Although the title combines the stories of both the Spideys and moves forward, there are times when the narrative seems to leave Miles Morales behind. Screen Rant’s Kyle Gratton described this by saying:

Perhaps the one disappointment in Spider-Man 2’s story is a feeling that Miles takes a back seat to Peter. It’s still very much a tale of two Spider-Men – Miles isn’t short-changed by any means – but the circumstances of the narrative result in Peter being the greater focus.

However, despite a few shortcomings and a few disappointments to some for different reasons, the reviews for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 are very positive, coining the game as one of the best superhero games ever made. Insomniac Games seems to have outdone themselves with the sequel and set a pretty high standard for the future times in the genre. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 launches on October 20 for PS5.
