“We’ve always thought of our Spider-Heroes as ‘acrobatic improvisors’,”: Senior Creative Director Bryan Intihar Explains New Abilities and Gameplay in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

Senior Creative Director Bryan Intihar has been a man in demand, with everyone demanding to speak to him about the upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Recently he sat down with Sony’s own PlayStation blog, and in doing so, dropped a few interesting pieces of information that’ll perk up any fans’ ears for sure.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s New Moves, Symbiote and All

Since the explosive extended gameplay trailer at the PlayStation Showcase in June of this year, fans have been desperate to see and hear more of the upcoming game, but specifically more about how the Symbiote Suit is going to affect Peter and his in-game combat. The trailer showed off some surprisingly aggressive moves for our usually caring and helpful Peter, with him casually throwing civilians to the floor for one, but also having huge tendril looking things shoot from him and grab Kraven’s lackies, smashing them into the floor and the walls of houses nearby.

This is a far cry from the Spider-Man we last saw in Marvel’s Spider-Man and Miles Morales, where Peter would, without fail, always save every henchman when they were kicked off a rooftop, webbing them to the walls instead of allowing them to fall to their deaths.

Speaking to the PlayStation Blog, Intihar explained.

“We’ve always thought of our Spider-Heroes as ‘acrobatic improvisors,’ and in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, we wanted to equip them with new ways to do so during combat. This includes Pete’s Spider-Arms and Symbiote powers, while Miles now brings two forms of bioelectric Venom to every fight. And when you start combining these abilities with all-new Spider-Gadgets like the Web Grabber, it can lead to some exciting combos.”

Clearly the changes in personality aren’t the only way the Symbiote Suit will affect Parker, but with very little known about the end product, we’ll have to wait and see how it all comes together in the end.

The newest story trailer shown at San Diego Comic Con also showcased more of the newest ability in-game, the web-wings. With the game growing monumentally in scope with two new boroughs in Brooklyn and Queens being added, the development team rightly figured players would need and want a quicker, much different traversal option to just web-swinging, and this is where the web-wings come in. Also talking to the PlayStation Blog, Senior Game Director Ryan Smith said.

“We are really excited for people to try out the Web Wings. For us it was a cool opportunity to bring something people have seen in comics and movies and integrate it in the game. Swinging is the core of our Spider-Man traversal, so we designed the Web Wings to work with swinging and complement it. That way you can weave back and forth between the two to build up speed and height.

When you use the Web Wings with our wind tunnels, though, that’s one of the ways to go across the city super-fast and really push the speed of traversal, which was one of our goals. Thanks to the power and speed of the PS5, Web Wings, add another layer to our traversal system and change up how you look at getting around the different parts of the city.”

For now it seems that Insomniac Games have thought of everything in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and with the game due to release on October 20th we don’t have long to wait whatsoever.
