Spoilers ahead for the sequel.

The highly anticipated sequel had big shoes to fill given the original game’s success, and the spinoff title, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, highlights the journey of the young webslinger into becoming a fully realized Spider-Man. Fans have theorized and speculated about the possible new villains that would be introduced to the series, and Scream was a welcome surprise.

Creatively deviating from the original source material, which is a prevalent practice in other superhero adaptations, Mary Jane Watson became the host for this version’s Scream. In an intense face-off at the Parker residence, Harry Osborn now bonded with Venom means to eliminate Spider-Man and lured him by threatening the life of MJ.

Her courageous act to save Peter from Venom‘s tendrils made her vulnerable to being taken over by another symbiote.

Scream makes a surprise appearance as a boss fight in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

Die-hard fans of the comic books are in for a treat with how Insomniac is using characters from the Spider-Man lore and putting their original spin to enhance their story that tackles the chain reaction of pent-up rage causing rifts in a relationship.

Yuri was amazed by how well executed it was and how it made sense to the larger story rather than random fan service, and she recalls the moment as difficult to act on.

Not necessarily wanting to hurt her, but the fight brings out the worst in people when they have all these feelings kept at bay. Scream‘s dialogue throughout the fight points out how horrible Peter is to MJ, and the words connected more in a painful way than her powerful hair tendrils ever did.

Spider-Man Fans Scream for More Enemy Variety

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was a major step up from previous games, but fans still want more.

The symbiote has taken a toll on the characters, Peter more so than others. In the first game, he was faced with a difficult choice: either save the one person he loves, which is his Aunt May, or the entirety of New York from the Devil’s Breath virus. The needs of many outweighed his own, and even a dying May knows this and accepts her fate, yet Peter still feels the guilt and rage.

During his time with Venom, he became more aggressive, which allowed him to channel all of his pain through his fists.

The inclusion of Scream is a testament to how well-informed Insomniac is with the Spider-Man mythology, a treat to long-time fans of the character, and how creative they are in world-building. Maybe down the road, the developers would use other characters that aren’t as well known and integrate them into their original world for a future title.
