Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s Symbiote Suit Offers the Chance for Insomniac Games to Fully Embrace the Meme of it All

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is nearly here, and with every passing day, as we get closer to release, fan expectation is growing. Due to arrive on PlayStation 5 on October 20th, it represents the first true AAA exclusive on the console, with the likes of God of War: Ragnarok and Horizon: Forbidden West both being developed for current and last-gen consoles. To say there’s a lot riding on this is an understatement, and like Starfield for the Xbox, it’s expected we’ll see gamers buying a PlayStation 5 just to experience the title.

Showcase season is coming to a close, and with it there has been a flood of news, with reveals of unannounced games, gameplay trailers for highly anticipated titles and unfortunate delays of left, right and centre.

When the PlayStation Showcase kick-started the busy summer period of gaming news, many expected Insomniac Games to show up with something Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 related. No-one expected as much as we got, nor the surprising revelations regarding Peter and his latest suit.

The Symbiote Suit is infamous in Spider-Man lore. Ignoring the horrendous version Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 gave us, the suit is often considered the one all fans want to turn up, no matter the media. From its initial conception in the early 80s as part of a fan contest – Marvel then bought the idea for $220! – and debuted in the original Secret Wars, the Symbiote Suit has been present throughout Spider-Man’s history.

Fans were disappointed then, when in Marvel’s Spider-Man’s long list of alternate suits, there was no Symbiote Suit, and that appears to have been for a good reason. In an interview last month, Creative Director Bryan Intihar confirmed the suit was held back, instead being saved for the sequel, due to “it needing an entire game devoted to it”.

This decision has proven a wise one, because along with the inclusion of Venom and raising questions as to who the host is, it allows a completely different, fresh and brutal take on the gameplay, with the trailer showing off just how much more aggressive combat will be whilst Peter has the Symbiote Suit, not to mention the clear changes to his personality his interactions with civilians and Miles show.

Spider-Man’s Symbiote Suit has Always Brought Out the Anger in Peter

One common theme through every single appearance of the Symbiote Suit, no matter the media involved, is that it brings out the anger in Peter. It makes him harder to relate to, with violence being his preferred solution. It warps his perception of right and wrong, and blurs the lines of what is acceptable.

In the original comic run, it is only down to this change in his approach to criminals and everyday situations he realises he needs to remove the Symbiote Suit, and after some difficulty, actually manages to break the connection. The alien that the suit actually is then slithers off and finds a new host, Eddie Brock, and thus Venom was born.

In the more recent Spider-Man: The Animated Series, the Symbiote Suit and some hilarious voice overacting gave us the best of the worst dialogue for Peter and his suit, and this is where Insomniac have to take a cue.

Voice Overacting At Its Finest

The developer have made no secret of their ability to throw the tiniest of easter eggs into their games, and the previous two in the franchise were littered with the smallest details only the most die-hard fans would recognise. Whilst it certainly shouldn’t be a central part of any cinematic or storyline in the game, the above video’s dialogue definitely needs to be included somewhere, and fans of the character and the television show have been mentioning it ever since the PlayStation Showcase.

Whether this happens, whether it’s a tiny easter egg or a fully-fledged cinematic, it’d be a missed opportunity by Insomniac Games not to have it somewhere, somehow. If only for the fans.

Do you think this video meme will have any impact on the upcoming sequel? Do you want it included? Or do you think this’ll make the Symbiote Suit a little too gimmicky? Let us know in the comments!
