The expansion of the MCU to a Multiversal level has also brought with it many opportunities for new characters from Marvel Comics to be introduced on the big screen. But the franchise also plans to reintroduce characters already part of superhero pop culture, the X-Men to be more specific, who had already made their big screen debuts long ago with 20th Century Fox.

And with Disney acquiring the company in a hostile takeover, all the IPs that Fox once possessed came back to it, which also involved the X-Men franchise. Thus, with the progression of the MCU’s narrative, the mutants are all set to return, and this time, the main villain they will go up against will be Mister Sinister, the character that was supposed to be a part of 2017’s Logan.

In a recent report by trusted industry insider Daniel Richtman, it was stated that the main supervillain that the X-Men may fight with their first appearance in the MCU might be Mister Sinister. From the pages of Marvel Comics, the character of Mister Sinister is one of the oldest and most manipulative antagonists in history, who likes to work from the shadows while being the leader of an assassin group named The Marauders.

The character is also one of the most fearsome foes that the X-Men have fought because he was a scientist on par with intellectual minds like Charles Darwin, who wanted to recreate humans into superhumans. Thus, if the MCU wants to create a big splash with the debut of the titular superheroes in the franchise, then they could ask for no one better than Mister Sinister to play the lead antagonist.

Although the villain might become the fresh face of evil in the future, he almost became part of 2017’s Logan before James Mangold shot that idea down.

Before Logan hit the cinemas in 2017, some rumors suggested Mister Sinister being the main villain in the film which proved to be Hugh Jackman’s last ride as the titular character before MCU revival. But after the film’s release, Mangold explained why he didn’t want the aforementioned character as the antagonist. Speaking with CinemaBlend, he said:

“Now that you’ve seen some of the movie, I think [what] you get a better sense of is, that’s exactly the kind of thing this movie avoids. Meaning, the kind of operatic highly-costumed, stroboscopic villainy… that’s not in this movie. Everything is kind of as real as we can make it.”

This direction choice did wonders for the film, as it became an homage to the legacy that Jackman left behind for playing the character of Wolverine for almost two decades.
