The Dark Knight trilogy is widely hailed as one of the most revered superhero franchises ever created. However, it does have a notable flaw that The Batman – Part II must avoid. In the world envisioned by writer and director Matt Reeves, Gotham City takes on a distinct personality, becoming more than just a backdrop for Batman’s battles against crime. This approach has been lauded as one of the greatest strengths of the first film.

The upcoming The Batman – Part II has already been confirmed to address the primary issue found in The Dark Knight. The 2022 release of The Batman introduced many aspects from the Batman comics that hadn’t been extensively explored in previous live-action portrayals. The film notably focused on Batman’s detective skills, a crucial facet of the character’s identity. Since this aspect hadn’t received much attention in live-action adaptations, Reeves felt apprehensive about how audiences would respond to The Batman’s detective-driven narrative.

Matt Reeves Will Put The Caped Crusader At The Center In The Batman – Part II

In a recent Collider interview, Matt Reeves candidly discussed the highly anticipated sequel to The Batman, featuring the talented Robert Pattinson as the iconic vigilante. Reeves revealed that both Pattinson and Mattson Tomlin are diligently working on the script, with a firm determination to avoid the mistakes made in The Dark Knight trilogy.

He emphasized that the upcoming film will center on Bruce Wayne as the emotional core of the narrative, diverging from the approach of the previous trilogy. Unlike The Dark Knight trilogy, where villains like Heath Ledger’s Joker and Tom Hardy’s Bane shared the spotlight and were often seen as equals to the superhero, the sequel will focus primarily on the internal journey of Bruce Wayne rather than elevating the villains to the same level of prominence.

While speaking to Collider, Reeves shared,

“To me, the thing that I really feel is that I also believe that Rob Pattinson is so special in the role. My goal has always been to do these point-of-view stories that allow the character to always be the emotional center of the story. Because a lot of times what happens is, after you do the first one, then suddenly other Rogues Gallery characters come in, and they kind of take over, and then Batman takes a backseat sort of character-wise, or emotionally.”

What To Expect From The Batman – Part II ?

While the precise plot details remain undisclosed, it is anticipated that The Batman – Part II will continue the story from its predecessor.

In The Batman, we witness Bruce forging an alliance with Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz) to combat the Riddler (Paul Dano) amidst a series of assaults on the fictional Gotham City. Although the film concludes with the Riddler’s confinement to Arkham, he manages to inflict significant damage by breaching the seawall, resulting in a flooded Gotham City.

Robert Pattinson as Batman

Even if Matt Reeves and his co-writer Mattson Tomlin choose not to incorporate time jumps in The Batman – Part II, they could potentially pick up the narrative threads from this point, portraying the city still grappling with a state of emergency.

The prospect of the Joker escaping from prison to unleash chaos or the introduction of new adversaries cannot be disregarded. Furthermore, there exists the possibility of Catwoman making a return.
