Argylle, directed by Matthew Vaughn, was released to mediocre response last week. Even after having a star cast of Henry Cavill, Sam Rockwell, Bryce Dallas Howard, Ariana DeBose, Dua Lipa, John Cena, and others, the movie could not manage to do well at the box office. Cavill, who plays the titular character of Agent Argylle, was unable to save the movie, unlike how his character saves the world.
John Cena, who plays the character of Wyatt in the movie, is hopeful that Argylle can expand into a spyverse. Even the director, Matthew Vaughn, had similar ideas before the movie hit the theatres. But given the response the movie has received from audiences, it’s hard to envision this wish coming true for the actor-director duo.
John Cena Wants Argylle Spin-Off Projects
Actor John Cena, who plays a fictional character in the movie Argylle, wishes for the movie to expand into a franchise. The WWE superstar shared his views on possible future projects and spin-offs that could span from this movie. Given that the novel on which the movie is based already has more than enough source material for more projects, Cena thinks that adding more projects to the franchise would be easy if they can get the desired response from audiences. Even the director shared his ideas.
In an interview with Looper, Cena said,
“I do know Matthew Vaughn has a plan, and I hope he’s able to execute that plan. I think he’s got more than a movie in his mind, so I hope audiences around the world enjoy Argylle, and I hope we can get the band back together.”
Unfortunately, the box office chatter for Argylle has not been the most encouraging. The returns do not seem profitable, and the movie is doing poorly in theatres worldwide.
The Dream of Turning Argylle Into a Franchise Might Not Come True
Although the actor-director duo of John Cena and Matthew Vaughn really want to expand Argylle into a franchise, the scope for it is getting smaller each day. The audience response to the movie has not been very positive, and thus, the possibility of more projects spanning from this one movie in the future seems bleak.
The movie, which was made on a budget of $200 million, has only managed to scrape $18 million domestically and $35 million worldwide in its opening weekend. The critics were not too kind to the movie either, giving it negative reviews, which impacted the box office. With a 35% RT critics score, the movie’s future does not look bright. But, if they can get a green light from producers, there is still a chance that Matthew Vaugh and the band can get back together to make a movie of better quality.
Argylle is playing in theatres worldwide.
