Director Matthew Vaughn’s 2024 movie featuring Henry Cavill, Argylle, is officially out and so far, the response from the audience has been underwhelming. The spy action comedy focuses on an introverted spy novelist who realizes that her new spy novel mirrors real-world events.
Cavill, who plays Agent Argylle in the movie, has received praise from his fans for his acting. Vaughn explained that he was looking for someone who was like an “old movie star” for this role and Cavill was perfect. The actor was asked to exhibit the traits of James Bond actors Sean Connery and Roger Moore. Cavill is no stranger to the role of James Bond as the actor once came very close to playing the British spy but was rejected because he was too young. As the James Bond franchise looks for its next Bond, Cavill was reportedly rejected once again, this time for being too old.
Matthew Vaughn wanted Henry Cavill to act like James Bond stars Sean Connery and Roger Moore in Argylle
Director Matthew Vaughn and actor Henry Cavill recently appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast to talk about their latest movie, Argylle. While on the topic of casting, Vaughn explained what he expected from Cavill’s performance as Agent Argylle in the movie,
“For me, Argylle was a mixture of [Sean] Connery and Roger Moore. So, when he fought I wanted it to be Connery. – That was Argylle in my head, meaning the toughness of Connery.”
Sean Connery starred in seven Bond films between 1962 and 1983 while Moore also played the British spy in seven feature films between 1973 and 1985. In 2005, Cavill was reportedly a final choice for the role of James Bond in Casino Royale but Daniel Craig snatched the role from him because the producers preferred an older Bond.
Now, once again Cavill has expressed interest in taking over the role after Daniel Craig’s exit. However, sources claim that once again the actor is getting rejected due to his age, and this time, it’s because he’s too old.
Henry Cavill is ready to return as Agent Argylle on this condition
In one of his recent interviews, Vaughn revealed that he plans to create two sequels of Argylle, and not just that, he hinted during his solo appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that the Argylle franchise and Kingsman franchise may collide in the future.
As for Cavill, he has stated that he plans to continue his time in the franchise only if the “story is good, and the character has a place to go, and it fits in with everything else.” Unfortunately, Argylle has been a disappointing movie for critics as well as some fans. Argylle was released in the United States on 2nd February 2024 and is expected to be released on Apple TV+ in April 2024.
