Stories of FromSoftware games such as Elden Ring, Dark Souls, and Bloodborne are told via in-game elements. Fans of the studio hold this narrative style in high regard, as it puts the onus of exploration and understanding on the player, encouraging a more thorough experience.

It also makes certain revelations more impactful to discover them as opposed to being informed of them by a third party. But what if there are no clues about such events in the world? That’s the approach being taken by the latest DLC.

No Mention Or Clues of Messmer or the Land of Shadows in Elden Ring

Messmer is never mentioned once in Elden Ring.

There are untold horrors brewing in the mind of Miyazaki. From the eradication of the dragons in Dark Souls to the blood transfusion experiments in Bloodborne, the man has created some truly twisted events. However, Messmer may be his most evil creation to date.

ELDEN RING Shadow of the Erdtree – Story Trailer

This new character is shrouded in a lot of mystery, and this isn’t just Miyazaki’s doing. The story trailer made it seem like he is the top dog in the Land of Shadow, and we see him leading what appears to be a sacking or a “purge” of a city “without Grace or honor.” The choice of words there is interesting in itself, as without Grace would imply Messmer was not part of Queen Marika’s Golden Order.

We don’t know exactly what Messmer has done in the Land of Shadow, but we do know it’s so heinous that Marika had all mention of it struck from history. The lore in FromSoftware games branches out to include aspects of their DLC too. But it seems the Shadow of the Erdtree will be taking place in a lore vacuum, and we will be learning things never discussed before.

Miyazaki had mentioned in an interview that Messmer too had a throne in Morgott’s boss arena. The empty space on the left-hand side might have been his, which was later removed according to Queen Marika’s orders.

Queen Marika Will Have an Important Role in the DLC

Queen Marika is a major factor in the Land of Shadow's destiny.

Miquella is the central character of the expansion, but he is not the only demigod in focus. It was previously stated that the DLC would explore Queen Marika’s past as well, and we get to see that right from the very first shot in the trailer. One would think the long-haired being is Miquella, but the wrist ornaments resemble those of Queen Marika.

Elden Ring’s new DLC is shaping up to be a grand experience. Miyazaki has revealed it is the largest DLC the studio has worked on to date. With a new region around the size of Limgrave in the base game, players will have all new sights to enjoy and dungeons to explore.

Pre-orders for the DLC have begun, and we have less than a month before it releases. For those who have stepped away from the game for a while, it’s a good time to fire it up again and get back into the swing of things. After all, there are enemies tuned similarly to Malenia in the DLC.

Do you have any guesses as to what Messmer’s crimes were? Let us know in the comments below.
