Miles Teller and JK SimmonsWhiplash was an intense and gripping tale revolving around a young drummer, Andrew at a prestigious music conservatory who dreams of becoming one of the greatest drummers in the world. However, things take a turn when he is met with an abusive and harsh instructor.

For Teller, shooting wasn’t easy, for not only was he portraying a character with his own internal battles and wild hunger to succeed but also had to face Simmon’s brutal instructor and his harsh teaching style. Hence, when asked about his favorite scene in the movie, Teller immediately answered it was the one where Simmons broke his rib while shooting.

In an interview with The Guardian, the actor remarked,

“JK cracked a rib. I’m not proud of it, but after a guy’s slapping you and yelling at you for three weeks straight, it’s nice to finally… as a character, I’m speaking! I always dug that scene because he just finally snaps.”

He added on,

“He owes me one, for sure.”

Referring to Simmons winning an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor and the ‘hell’ his character put Teller’s during the entire movie.

“I’m a pretty light-hearted person. So how Andrew carried himself physically, how he related to people, his temperament, all those things couldn’t be further from me. But what I liked about that kid was the fact that he was an underdog, you’d look right past him, but he’s got the heart and the perseverance as big as anyone.”

And even though the actor did not manage to get several accolades like his co-star Simmons, Teller’s portrayal won hearts for his emotionally charged performance.

Whiplash can be streamed on Amazon Prime.
