Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will be released on the 10th of this month, which is just a week away, and fans are eagerly waiting for the reboot. Among the many new features and reimagining of the game’s campaign missions, developers of the franchise, Sledgehammer Games, have stated that the open combat missions are a “huge innovation for the campaign.

Be that as it may, some fans seem to be least impressed by the specific feature, even going so far as to highly go against having it in future Call of Duty titles. A recent poll on X (formerly Twitter) has revealed what fans feel about the feature, and a large section of those who responded seem to be against the idea that Open Combat Missions should be retained.

Popular Call of Duty news reporter CharlieIntel posted a poll on X asking his followers, “Should Open Combat Missions return in future Call of Duty campaigns?,” and gave the option to choose either yes or no. While several fans responded positively to the question, the poll itself revealed that they were highly in favor of the feature being taken off future titles.

Open Combat Missions are specially designed missions where players get to choose either a stealth approach with knives and night vision goggles or go in loud with light machine guns, armor plates, and grenades. Players will initially get a specific loadout to choose from based on the characters they choose to go with and the mission narrative, and they will get to choose from weapon crates as they progress through the levels.

Some fans had interesting theories as well, explaining their take on why the option was included in the upcoming Modern Warfare 3 title.

Others, such as AaronBurress33 and GTBato_, had replied, stating that a maximum of 2 or 3 open combat missions would be quite acceptable, and anything more than that would be way too much. Most others just blatantly replied with a straight “No.

Among those in favor of the feature returning to future titles, user jeanmrieffel mentioned how “the community never plays a campaign and they are only concerned about multiplayer or warzone,” and was in favor of the campaign in future titles being made the way it is in Modern Warfare 3. Another follower, xFleXy_, replied that they’re fun but “would be even better with more thought behind them rather than just a bigger sandbox.

Effective Equipment for Open Combat Missions in Modern Warfare 3

Open Combat Missions will sort out players with some useful items apart from weapons, including pieces of equipment and field upgrades. However, there are a couple of upgrades that players must consider while in OCMs.

Parachutes allow players to jump safely from any high point. These are quite useful when players are looking for a cover quickly, while also allowing players to cut the cord in between to force a landing anywhere they intend to.

Next is Ascenders, which helps players reach high points on maps. Using this item, players can zip up ropes to get to their desired positions or use ziplines to move horizontally across long points. Finally, there are Plate Carrier Upgrade Vests, which provide players with a high line of defense. These vests help players carry and equip a high number of armor plates at any given time. Additional armor helps players last longer during fights, making it an important piece of equipment.

Talking about Open Combat Missions, Sledgehammer Games Creative Director David Swenson revealed that he prefers a stealth approach but appreciated that the game has the option to go guns blazing if he so chooses.

Player opinions are bound to change once the game is released in a week’s time, and it will be quite interesting to hear back from gamers once the game reaches more players. Pre-order bonuses still stand until the game’s release day, with several goodies up for grabs from the game’s Vault Edition.
