Mortal Kombat 1 has been out for a little over two weeks at this point, and for better or worse, it is still dominating discussions, in no small part thanks to the efforts of Ed Boon, franchise creator and constant hype-man for the series.
Known for his frequent teases on Twitter, Ed Boon has a habit of commenting on, confirming or denying rumors and making big announcements for his games – think of him as the gaming James Gunn. It seems he’s done it again, but this time, with future characters involved in the latest Mortal Kombat entry.
Ed Boon Teases and Teases
Long before release, it was leaked that Omni-Man, Homelander, and Peacemaker would be making an appearance in Mortal Kombat 1’s first Kombat Pack. Lo and behold, a few weeks after that leak the news was confirmed, and more so, that the stars of their respective roles, JK Simmons, Antony Starr, and John Cena would all be reprising and voicing their characters.
Now, a few months on we’ve had a new leak, with data miners trawling through the code of Mortal Kombat 1 and finding the possibility of more iconic characters being included in future Kombat Packs, this time the iconic Scream serial killer, Ghostface.

Ed Boon isn’t one to miss an opportunity, both to increase the buzz around his flagship series but also some free marketing, has done what he usually does, and posted a less than subtle image – potentially just a tease to the fans – which could indicate the validity of the data miners find.
It could also indicate he loves messing with fans, which if history is any indication, certainly wouldn’t be out of character.

As the picture above shows, we’ve already had The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’s Leatherface, Friday the 13th’s Jason, and Nightmare on Elm Street’s Freddy, but that still leaves a bevy of unexplored horror icons to include.
Ghostface is included, and with what the data miners found, that seems like a sure bet for a future Kombat Pack, but the others in the picture are yet to be hinted at, leaked, or otherwise confirmed. Halloween’s Michael Myers seems an obvious choice, his seemingly supernatural longevity and strength being an easy fit for the fighting franchise, similar to Hellraiser’s Pinhead.

What would be interesting to see implemented though, is the diminutive stature of Chucky and Billy the Puppet from the Chucky and Saw franchises respectively. It would seem that the smaller stature of these two characters would provide numerous advantages for those playing as them, with the majority of their opponent’s attacks flying above their heads, not to mention a programming and gaming mechanics nightmare for the developers.
What do you think of yet another tease from Ed Boon? Who do you want to see involved in upcoming Kombat Packs? And what would be your ideal horror icon to be included? Let us know in the comments!
