This article of the Prime Video series Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2024) Season 1 Episode 1, “First Date,” contains spoilers.
The Mr. & Mrs. Smith pilot episode “First Date” is highly entertaining and highlighted by the exciting chemistry of the leads. Donald Glover (Community) and Maya Erskine (Blue Eye Samurai) star as the titular couple, placed together because no one suspects a couple to be paired as assassins. The series, though, gets off to an exciting start with the deaths of two high-profile guest stars.
Eiza González and Alexander Skarsgård play a couple and enjoy a nice bottle of wine. They try to savor it because it’s the final one. They then see a car speeding down the road from a distance. We don’t know their names, but the husband tells his wife to grab the money while he grabs the weapons. She then stops him, saying he can’t run anymore.
When he walks into the kitchen, he can’t talk. He is also choking and has welts on his face. He collapses and dies. The wife takes her machine gun and opens fire on the assassin, who is spraying bullets into their home. She is then shot dead by a sniper’s rifle, which is hiding in the field. It looks like the shooter is a woman.
Prime Video’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2024) Season 1 Episode 1 Recap: Who are John and Jane Smith?
We have yet to find John and Jane Smith’s true identities. They both arrive at an empty office building with a computer awaiting their arrival. That screen says, “Hihi” and asks for the nail clippings they brought. They then insert them into a compartment. The computer then asks a series of questions. She says we learn Jane’s height and her ethnicity—Korean and Scottish/White.
Jane has never been in love. John has said it twice. Three, if he includes his mother. They ask about their savings. John is worried about never seeing his mother again. Jane says, “Sign me up,” knowing she will cut off ties with her father. John is African-American. He was dishonorably discharged.
Jane is secretive, and John is competitive. What they have in common is that they love the same food: pasta and Korean barbecue. While this happens, the scenes are intercut with their arrival at their new home. John knocks on her door at night without his shirt on, lamely making an excuse that he left it off for reasons other than trying to hit on her.
What is Mr. & Mrs. Smith’s first mission?
John and Janes’s first mission from “Hihi” is to follow an older woman. (The message shows a picture of her in sunglasses.) “Meet her at restaurant Orsay at 12 pm. Sit near bar. Hand off at 40. 717855, -741019258. Have fun.” They think the target must be a foreign spy or United States intelligence. On the mission, they talk at the restaurant. John tries to ask personal questions. Jane rebuffs him and refuses to tell him her real name.
They talk about how they applied for high-risk jobs and were recruited through email. John admits that he hates doing the dishes. He also has to win an argument. Their pairing as a couple is an old KGB tactic. John lies to her about killing people, which he does during the “Hihi” interview. Jane makes a quip about a “pedophile,” and we wonder if it may be about her father. They have some chemistry at Orsay. Even more on the phone while Jane follows the target.
John would ask her questions in her earpiece and reply with texts. The banter has them losing the older woman for a minute. They eventually find her, with John using some quick thinking. He buys gifts in Little Korea and puts them in a box. He hands it to Jane. John causes a distraction by accusing a stranger of seeing his daughter. Jane runs into the woman. They drop their boxes. Jane picks up the targets. They walk away.

Prime Video’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith Season 1 Episode 1 Ending Explained: What Was in the Package?
The package that Mr. and Mrs. Smith intercepted contained a bomb. However, when they delivered it to a lovely woman with lots of armed guards, they discovered that it was a cake. John and Jane felt humiliated when they saw the delicious dessert.
They thought this was a different mission than the dangerous one they had signed up for. However, when they left the house and walked out down the driveway, complaining about their mission, an explosion knocked them flat on their faces. The home is destroyed.
They run down the street, knowing the bad guys can identify them and are in pursuit. John and Jane manage to get away. Later, they separate and meet at their apartment. They come to a better understanding of each other. We also find out the cat’s name is Max, and Jane brought it from her old life. Before John leaves, he tells Jane he’s killed people before today.
